how long does it take for a check to clear?

I wrote a check to a friend over a week ago. She took it to my bank and cashed it. Two days later, I wrote out my rent check. It had to go through two banks to clear. The check I wrote to her has not shown up in my checking account, but my rent check did. I don't know what the hold up is

Update:

We used to do our banking at the same bank. She told me today that she changed banks about a month ago cause the new bank was closer to where she works. So she cashed it at her bank, and yes the rent checks are electronically processed.

Update 2:

check finally cleared after 22 days

You need to ask your friend if he or she has cashed this check yet or not.

Cashing it at her own bank means it was a deposit...she just took out an amount equivalent to the deposit.

If she cashed it at your bank, it should have cleared that night, or at the latest, the next day.

    1-3 business days usually.

It can take up to a week, or so. If she deposited the check at a different bank than the one you use but the landlord deposited it in their account but at the same bank that can make a huge difference.

At what level? For your purposes, not long.

It can take a week for a check to clear when deposited in a non-business account.

Anywhere from one business day to never.

Why does it matter? You know you wrote the check so consider that money gone forever. It is your responsibility to know how much money you have deposited and spent.
