It was among the first infantry units raised in Australia and the first one recruited in Western Australia for service in World War 1. In April 1915 the 11th landed at ANZAC Cove on Gallipoli and took part in the Battle of Lone Pine. After seven months in the trenches the battalion lost 353 men KIA during the Gallipoli Campaign.

After withdrawal from Gallipoli some of the men from the 11th were assigned to the newly formed 51st Battalion. After a period of rest and receiving reinforcements on the Island of Lemnos and in Egypt the 11th deployed to Western Europe where it took part in the fighting in France and Belgium until the end of the war in November 1918.
