What species of insect is this?

I believe that it is a Tic. If so, please confirm the stage of life, and gender.

Update:

It previously had eight legs. It broke two of them which is why it appears to only have six. It was the size of a pencil eraser, if not a little bigger.

I'm with Elaine M. It looks like a dead flea.

If it's laying on it's side, the long back legs indicate a flea. But it's hard to tell, the picture is too dark.

Ticks are not insects, they are arachnids in the same class as spiders and scorpions. Arachnids have 8 legs and no antennas. Your critter has antennas and appears to have six legs which makes it an insect. It looks like some kind of beetle.
