What's the best sushi?

I've tried the California roll and two other ones today. One had salmon on top with crab salad and avocado in the middle then the other had avocado on top with crab salad and cucumber inside. They were okay but I want something with more flavor but less fish.

I've worked at a sushi restaurant for around 3 years now! It really depends on the house special rolls that all sushi places have. In my opinion, kani (imitation crab) inside sushi is kinda cheap and unimpressive as well as unadventurous (sometimes that is good though!)

Nigiri would be a good place to start if you were looking for something more traditional. Since you want flavor and not fish, then you're better off staying away from nigiri and sashimi lol. Look towards special rolls and regular rolls.

Tempura rolls would probably be my recommendation. Look for eel sauce, and spicy mayo inside rolls. Avocado and cucumber are very balancing within some sushi rolls. Look up dragon roll for instance - it is just avocado, cucumber, and eel as well as eel sauce. The place I work at makes all our own sauces so you should really look towards going to an actual GOOD highly rated sushi restaurant. You'll recognize flavor and quality there.

Look for tempura style rolls (Inside or out) and for different sauces. A lot of people love cream cheese inside sushi too, (I dont, but soooo many do !!) so if you're into that, its also a good suggestion.

I really like the volcano roll - despite the name it's not too spicy, just really flavorful. Or, next time you're at a sushi place, talk to the waiter and ask for a recommendation! They'll guide you to what's on their menu that you will like :)

More flavor but less fish? Try a Philadelphia roll, or maybe the Unagi. Unagi is actually eel, which sounds gross, but its served cooked and is really tasty. A Philadelphia roll is smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber. So technically neither are actually sushi, but served at every sushi joint.

    I love black rice sushi!

The karage chicken is always a good filling and is obviously not fishy.

My favourite is soft shell crab rolls.

Dynamite roll is the best! It consists of avocado, flying fish egg, tempura shrimp, crab meat and cucumber with mayo!
