Gearbox won't go into 1st or 2nd gear?

Update:

I was driving home this afternoon - and at the traffic light, I noticed I couldn't get into 1st or 2nd gear, just out of the blue. I can start in 3rd gear, but it won't budge beyond that.

No strange noises or previous problems that would indicate a problem ..

    Hi so the issue is wear of the parts within the gearbox over time and abusive driving since this car came off the forecourt when new the parts inside the gearbox have worn away. so now it needs new parts and some technical knowledge to take it apart and rebuild it. so you either do it yourself or pay for a new or re-conditioned gearbox.

    Any clue what kind of vehicle you drive? Sort of hard to help you when I don't even have that info to do a search on mu tech line for common problems.
