Try to let her down as easy as possible. You can convey the message in a note or in person if you wish. Say things like, " it's not working out or whatever." Make sure that you let her know that you care about her deeply as a "friend." If I were the guy I wouldn't want to break up with someone going through a rough patch, I would try to help the person overcome his depression and clingliness.
