Pee Gee Hydrangea or Hydrangea paniculata grandiflora. They bloom from July to September and have white cone shaped richly scented flowers that turn pink as each cones or panicle ages. They are hardy to Zone 3.
Lilacs flower much earlier in the Spring and Phlox paniculata does not grow as big being an herbaceous perennial and does not have the perfume.

I respectfully disagree with lilac. It's a Hydrangea paniculata. Possible "Vanilla Strawberry". Check out the third picture down on this site. http://wreathfactoryonline.com/2012/08/08/from-che... If it is blooming now,mid to late summer, it's deffinately A Hydrangea. Lilacs main bloomtime are spring and don't rebloom as profusely this time of year.

I have one like it in my yard. It is beautiful, but has very little pink. The most awsome lime green baby buds that are excellent for arranging fresh flowers and also funeral designs. I think this bush is definitely the Hydrangea family. No lilac. I love, love, love her. Judy
