How to talk to my parents more?

I'm very quiet around my parents since I was like 12. I'm now 17. I only talk when they start off the conversation. It's really awkward and kinda sad to live under the same roof 24/7 with your own parents and all you do is eat and sleep in their house but hardly talk to them. How can I change this without taking them by surprise.

I found a couple of ways. I'm the same way with my dad. I'll talk to him only when he starts the conversation, and answer his questions just enough to satisfy his curiousity.

One thing you can do is buy a notebook and call it like Notes to my Parents. Set it out where they can see it, write in it and see if one of them gives you an answer.

Ask if you can cook a family meal and like all sit down around a table, asking about people's days. I ask my sister a lot to tell me one thing she learned in school that day. Open ended questions that can lead to a conversation is better than "how are you?" which in most cases gets you "fine." if coming from me.

As weird as it sounds, invite your parents to hang out with you. Go to the movies, the beach, the mall, whatever you like doing, and use the time in the car and even while you're out to talk to them. Asking them to drive you somewhere and talking in the car is a lot more natural than barraging them out of nowhere.

Simply ask if you can chat.

Sharing is the best asset. and know them what you feel.
