Question for MMA trained people?

In a self defense situation are you taught to kick above the height of the knee, or are you discouraged from kicking above the height of the knee?

What are your thoughts on doing this or not doing it for self defense?

I wouldn't throw any kick above my waist.

You don't wanna run the risk of getting that leg snatched up, or getting cracked in the face with one foot on the ground; in either case you're goin down.

Above. The main target tends to be the inner and outer thigh, though for a self-defense situation, the groin is also a solid target. Thrust kicks can be aimed at the knee or hips.

It's actually very hard to kick below the knee without opening yourself up to punches because of the range involved. Kicks would hardly be my #1 choice in a fight anyway- punches and clinched strikes would be- but if you're going to use them, take advantage of the range they provide.

In a self defense situation that really mattered I would:

    Kick the knee

    Hit the throat

    Kick the jewels

    Stab

Or use my Glock 19 concealed carry.

You are suppose to kick just above the knee. Kicking directly on the knee might hurt you more then your attacker.

Kicking high is risky. How often do you see fighters in the ring kick themselves right on to their butt in fights from slipping on high kicks, it's not uncommon. Plus in a self defense situation, you are not warmed up so things are more likely to go wrong. Keep the kicks low.

Kicks are not ideal in a self-defense situation. Unless you’re Anderson Silva, kicking your attacker won’t stop him from attacking you.

The ideal method is getting your attacker to the ground ASAP and choke him out.
