Should Australia pursue multilateral or bilateral trade agreements?

I'm having trouble understanding some content for my exam, so I'd love a better understanding of whether multilateral or bilateral trade agreements would be better for Australia right now?

You're asking: Should I only eat oranges or only eat apples ??? Why do you have to choose between the 2 ?!? And don't you think it depends on the nature of the agreement ? Nothing is black and white:

Any country has got a combination of bilateral and multilateral agreements.

Example: You'll sign bilateral agreements with countries that share the same economic model but you'll sign multilateral agreements when it comes to defense treaties.
