Additional driver on rental car?

I have full insurance on my car so when I rent a car I waive all the coverage they offer, so I am 100% responsible for whatever happens. They want to charge me $12 day to add another driver, even my wife. I don't get it. What if I don't pay it and she drives anyway. What's the worst that can happen?

She gets into an accident... I hope that $12 a day you saved will pay for the thousands you may pay if she is at fault. Can you live with losing every thing you have? If so that is the worse that can happen.

The worst that can happen is that you will be held responsible for the damage to the rental car AND the time their car is in the repair shop. This is something the rental companies are now charging for. It's buried in the "fine" print of the contract you sign. Your insurance may cover the cost of repairing their vehicle, but they lose use of the vehicle for possibly 3 or 4 weeks while it's in for repairs. If they don't have the car available to them, they can't rent it out, which means they lose money. Since your insurance company won't cover the expense of the rental company losing use of their vehicle for an extended period of time, the rental company will get the lost revenue from you. It's a new wrinkle they've added lately so they can get back a piece of the insurance coverage they used to have.

The worst that could happen? She could wreck and kill someone, not br covered on insurance, and you get sued for everything you own. And possibly jail.

If she is not listed and gets into an accident, you will have no insurance coverage. The worst? You don't even want to know. You and her could spend time in jail or spend the rest of your lives paying off an accident claim.
