Stonehenge in England?

I'm going to England in May to visit family and to see London. I'm trying to decide if i should see the Stonehenge. It seems kinda out of the way and kinda boring, but it seems like an important sight. Is it worth seeing?

If you visit Stonehenge and just stand there and look at the stones, it isn't very interesting. Seen one rock, seen them all. But, if you know something of the history of the place, then you can see something in it. If you know who lived in that area, who they were, how they lived, and read the theories of why and how Stonehenge was built, then that's what makes it interesting. Do a bit of reading before you go, and you'll get more out of your visit. Here are a few websites to start with:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge

  • They give you a headset when you go to reception, and listening to the informative commentary as you walk round the site will help you comprehend the mind- blowing human achievement Stonehenge is. It deserves to be on any list of ancient Wonders.

Before I visited , I had seen film footage of it and was put- off by the proximity of the nearby road/ traffic, but somehow, that goes unnoticed when you get absorbed in the story And remember, that part of the country has other places worth visiting, like the huge white horse carved into a green hillside to expose the pale chalk just under the surface - a sight you won't forget.

And what about the stunning cathedral in the lovely old city of Salisbury ?

Guru is right. Avebury is less of a tourist site and you can have more intimate contact with the stones. If you are a Pagan and or a lover of nature and the natural landscape, you will love ancient stones. If you are a very modern materialistic person, they will probably mean nothing to you.

To go to Stonehenge from London catch a train from Waterloo Station to Salisbury. They run every 30 minutes (hourly on Sunday) and take 85 minutes. The connecting Stonehenge Bus tour departs from outside Salisbury Station. Tickets including the train and bus tour are availanle at Waterloo Station.

For Avebury catch a train from London Paddington to Swindon. They run every 15 minutes and take 55 to 60 minutes. From Swindon Bus Station adjacent to the railway station, catch a 49 bus to Avebury

The guys from Ghost adventures went there and to the ancient ram Inn, the country side is pretty around there and if you continue to go west through Somerset, Devon and Cornwall the trip gets better with decent coastal resorts and eventually lands end which is associated with king Arthur and smuggling and the famous signpost, a train journey to torquay is good as the line goes by the coast.

Personally I think it is boring and you get a better 'affect' from the website http://www.stonehenge.org.uk/ than going there............ but I have seen it, many times on driving near , driving past and on several occassions visiting friends who have took me as they thought it was what I would want to see.......... it is remarkable as far as when it was built but I could think of many other things to do that would be far better.............

    Try Avebury instead.
