When evaluating absolute monarchs during the Middle Ages, it is important to balance their sexual escapades against their other behavior and not evaluate them by post-modern standards. While Henry II won't make the list as the most moral of medieval monarchs, his reign was relatively prosperous and peaceful compared with the reigns that immediately preceded it or came just after it. Moreover, Henry Beauclerc was responsible for many judicial and financial reforms. Admittedly, however, this is a little bit like rationalizing United States President Bill Clinton's womanizing by explaining that the United States economy was booming during the 1990s.

Since Henry as the fourth of William the Conqueror's sons started out to be a priest, he must have made up for lost time. According to the Humphrey's Family Tree Web site, Henry I is the direct ancestor of actors Clint Eastwood and Sigourney Weaver, First Lady Nancy Reagan, Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, Microsoft CEO Bill Gates, U.S. President Franklin Pierce as well as the English 19th-century novelist Elizabeth Gaskell and George Herbert, a 17th-century metaphysical poet. .

Yes indeed, Sir Royston, the chap was a very busy beaver. It is just as well that the Child Support Agency did not exist in ye olden times, as I daresay our glorious Kingdom would have been bankrupted in no time, due to his wanton proclivities.

My view is that nothing can be judged as "right" or "wrong" without the full details (e.g. how did he treated his illegitimate children and their mothers) and taking into consideration the mores of the times (i.e. how much society approved/disapproved adultery?).

Having said that, my opinion is that in any period of time, any action between consenting adults of solid mind are "right".

His motto was `Brace yourself Matilda its going to be a rough night ` . Henry lived in hope , Matilda lived in expectation.
