How long can I store guinea pig pellets before they go bad?

I have two guinea pigs and they have eaten a little less than 5lbs of pellets in the past 4 weeks since I got them. I want to buy in bulk to save cost, but I wasn't sure how long I can safely store pellets before they spoil. (Do they spoil?) Does anyone know? Also, what is the best way to store pellets? I'm thinking about buying the ones from the KMS Hayloft if that makes a difference.

Further, how long can I store hay? And what is the best way to store hay?

KMS pellets last a while. I belive the site says 200+ days before the vitamin c degrades? They should be kept in an air tight container, like those pet food containers at most pet stores. And they should not be frozen and kept away from sunlight. Make sure to follow the feeding instructions. My three pigs go through 25lbs in about 3 months or so, granted they do waste some of it.

Hay sort of depends. If stored properly it should last a long time. Proper storage should be someplace cool and dry, with no light. They hay should be kept off the ground and in a container that has adequate ventilation. If you are keeping it in your house a lot of people put it in laundry hampers. I order 9lbs of Oxbow hay through my local pet store and I store it in a 3 load sized laundry bag with a pull tie closure. Some people who order KMS just poke holes in the box it comes in and leave it that way. Guinea lynx has a section on hay storage i belive. If your planing on ordering bulk hay from KMS i'd suggest asking how long their hay keeps for spesifically. They are super nice about questions.

The trick is knowing the milling date. Most pet store size sacks do not have this information while most 25 and 50 lb sacks have it printed on the bottom tape While I know how our local dealer stores his stock, I have no idea what happens on the truck or in the distributors warehouse. Chow is usually considered to be OK for up to 6 months but I would never feed chow older than 90 days because poor storage increases the rate at which feed loses its nutritional value. Since we go through about 5-7 lbs a day, that isn't a problem. Most pet owners ought not to keep chow for more than 4-6 weeks because you never know how long it has been around.

If stored in a dry, well ventilated location out of the sun hay can be kept for 6-9 months

Oh yeahh....get 2. Guinea pigs are social animals so they need 2 or more buddies...of the same sex....unless you want babies but you said you didn't. I had a guinea pig. She died on Tuesday. I couldn't get her a friend cause she was very dominant and would eat all the food.... guinea pigs live usually 5 or 6 but some can live to 8 years! Sorry about your hamster! Good Luck! e-mail if you have anymore questions about guinea pigs!

You can freez pellets also when you put the pellets in the freezer it won't freeze the pellets and will kill any bugs. My guinea pig has a canister I put her pellets in it and I buy, buy the bulk and I buy her food every month. Bird seeds and pellets can be put in the freezer as the pellets won't freeze.
