Installing Internet security program - from disk but still downloads from Internet - why?

Okay, this might be a lame question

I bought Trend Micro Security program for the laptop. When I inserted the disc I assumed it would install from the disk and then maybe just download from the internet any updates. It didn't do this and instead seems to be downloading the whole program from the Internet - which is a pain as it uses up my wireless useage.

Is this normal, and if so why do they even bother to provide the disk if that isn't how it installs?

Also the instructions they provide do not match in anyway what actually appears on the screen - obviously that is just a rant and not a question as such.

that sucks, but for something thats constantly being updated its better just to connect and download the latest installer. or else basically you would install it, then when checking for updates it would find the new installer, then download the new installer and install it twice. then it would get the updates last. definition updates are different than installers , and new installers do come out all the time.

they have the CD so they have something to put on shelves. to appeal to not only to internet browsers but retail shoppers as well

i have an old installer for malwarebytes and it basically does the same thing (installs twice) - so I can see why trend micro does it the way they do

usually such programs first check to see

if there is a more up to date version available.

if there is, then it will download and install that version.
