What is life like in Timaru?

I have lived outside NZ for many years but an thinking of returning and perhaps living in Timaru. I was wondering if anyone could give me a thumb nail sketch of what life is like there. What activities, book clubs, theatrical groups etc are in existence?,

Are there many after shocks or earthquakes?

What is the cost of living like?

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks

A peaceful place you barely hear about. It can get cold but not so much with rain

From the sound of your interests, Timaru may well suit you. Pleasant enough smaller city - a bit on the quiet side. Big enough to have most things that cities have. Nicely positioned on the coast with either nice swimming beaches or real wild stony beaches. A busy and interesting port. Comes alive over summer when it becomes like a South Island resort with a very popular beach carnival. The local Theatre Royal for performing arts is gorgeous with active theatrical groups. Not the warmest place around with a killer easterly wind off the sea - however still has some hot days.

    Good luck
