There is a notch on the plastic of the bottom sides somewhere. Just lift the sticker next to that, and you should see it and be able to pull it out.

Some of the newer threads do not have notches but instead have the thread inserted into what looks like a slot between two disks. Look for the thread tail where it goes under the label, use a pin to pull it out from under, then you will unwind it from the slot. When finished cutting, grasp your spool, use your thumb to open the slot and place your thread back in. I always make sure a leave a good tail hanging out so I can find it easier.

Stupid is the question you don't ask. If you can't find the thread look for the cut they have made in the plastic so you can slip your thread in so you can find it again. Sometimes they cut it after they slip the thread in. The other way is to take a smaller needle or pin and slip it into a thread close to the top and/or bottom and run the needle to the top and if you don't find the end there check on the other end.

What do you do when you pull the tail out and it breaks off at the spool? Should be a better (easier) way to start the thread without breaking.
