A worse option than training an management, a better option than abandonment or euthanasia.

The first and best option with a problem barker is to determine why the dog is barking and remove the underlying cause - put up a privacy fence, give the dog more physical and mental exercise, keep the dog indoors or crated when it must be left alone, block access to windows, leave a radio or the TV on to muffle sounds, leave a stuffed kong or other "interactive" toys so that the dog is occupied, etc.

The next option is training - if the owner is present when the dog is barking, then the owner can teach a "quiet" command and teach the dog when it is acceptable to bark and not to bark (i.e. it's OK to bark at a stranger in the yard, not OK to bark at the neighbor in their own yard), training can also provide replacement behaviors so that the dog has another outlet for whatever reason they are barking.

Then, and only then, would a shock, citronella, or super-sonic anti-barking collar be appropriate to try, at the point when the other option is abandonment of the dog in a shelter or euthanization of the dog. The collars don't really teach the dog much - there are times a dog SHOULD be allowed to bark - and if the dog is barking out of anxiety, collars often make the problem worse, but for a dog that just barks "for the heck of it" when the owner is not present to correct (or with an owner unable or unwilling to give a correction) they can help reduce the barking and let a dog stay with their family.

They beat euthanasia or abandonment (which gives the dog less than a 50% chance of not being euthanized) but they are no replacement for solid management and training, and if used instead of management and training initially can actually make the problem worse as the dog finds another unacceptable outlet for their behavior (chewing, digging, self-harm, etc).

I do feel that the anti-bark collars can also be powerful. Most have a sensor for prolong on them so the dog can nonetheless bark once or so without being stunned. It just gives a tone to allow them to be aware of to no longer do it once more. Then if the persist to bark it will provide a moderate shock after which with each and every bark the depth goes up on the shock. Now this shock shouldn't be inhumane. Pay attention before we put them on our dogs both my husband and that i touched the prongs and let the puppies bark to believe the shock. It rather isn't any one of a kind than hanging a 9v battery for your tongue. Not like I do this now however good day as kids i'm definite all of us have performed that one earlier than. That didn't damage neither does the shock collar. I use the collars only once we are having friends arrive to preserve them quiet in any other case i will have a full blown bark-howl session that can final for five minutes. I tried spray bottles, i attempted eliminating them from the room, i tried the leash/ordinary collar and fairly tugging after they barked however nothing particularly labored. The anti-bark collars work. Now I simply put the collar on and not using a battery and they don't bark or they'll but in general best as soon as. Dog just must be taught to not do it after which simply the presence of the collar shall be enough. Now some humans are speaking about these collars being misused. The anti-bark collars relatively can't be misused as they simply respond to barking. It's the corrective shock collars that people have the control over to push a button and shock the canine. I actually don't think any individual will have to have that proper, chiefly once they get mad. Anti-bark collars will also be an mighty instrument, however as with every instrument you simplest use it except you don't want it. It must not be a normal object the dog wears continuously.

Personally I disagree with any form of anti barking collars think of it this way a dogs way of talking is barking so basically your telling you dog its wrong to talk would you like it if someone put a collar on you and every time you spoke it sprayed pepper up you nose say that's what its like for dogs they have very sensative ears so any high pitched noise is painful and can damage there hearing

Go here for the best dog training couse http://dog-training-course.checkhere.info/

Since it is obvious that you do not have a clue about obedience training, your services should be for free. You cannot train even an adult dog for 8 hours a day. About the most that can be done at any one time is 10 - 20 minutes and that is with an adult dog and not a puppy. The attention span on this baby is extremely short and training session should be no more than 10 minutes and twice a day. Additionally, there isn't going to be much learned if you will only be training for 5 days. Obedience training is cumulative and is done over a much longer period of at least several weeks to several months.

What you can charge is determined by your experience, reputation, and accomplishments and in a case like this, should also include guaranteed expectations. Just working with dogs over several years, is not the experience that is necessary to be a dog trainer. There are too many people who are putting that title to their name and fleecing the public. Don't be one of them.

  • i am not a fan of the shock collars for obvious reasons, and the high pitch ones i dont like either, just because dogs have super great hearing and the noise is extra loud to the dogs and could cause pain. If you have to use an anti bark collar i would suggest the cintronella one, it sprays the bottom of thier jaw when they bark and my dogs learned after 5 or 6 barks that they were gonna get sprayed and stopped barking!

I'm all for bark collars, when needed, but not the type you're talking about. I would use a REAL bark collar, and that would not be one of the noise making type.

I think it's better to find out why the dog is constantly barking and remove the cause. Rather than leave the dog frustrated but unable to bark...

I don't know much about them, but there is a list of pros/cons here, along with a list of different types of bark collars: http://www.lifescript.com/life/family/pets/pros_an...

I don't like the idea of them personally, but I know everyone's situation is different.
