What is the chemical difference between Prozac and Fluoxetine?

I put in my prescription for Prozac, but got Fluoxetine.

I already know that Fluoxetine is generic for Prozac.

Are there any chemical differences? Other differences? I don't like being on generic medicines if at all possible.

The generic isn't going to matter that much because they both do the same thing: stop the re-uptake of the chemical serotonin in our brains (you just reminded me to take my Prozac lol). This is the way it works: so you have one end if the neuron, called dentrites, and the other, called terminal branches. Dentrites are going to release serotonin, let's say 4 molecules. Two go into the terminal branches and the other two are going to go back into the dentrite that released them. Prozac blocks them from doing that, forcing them to go into the terminal branch with the others. Therefore, more serotonin is absorbed which boosts your happiness. So, since the job is still getting done, it really doesn't matter. The biggest factor between anxiety/depression medicines(SSRI's) are the side effects, which is why some people are on Prozac and some on Zoloft. Fluoxetene is so similar that your psych was comfortable enough giving it to you. You're fine. Mine pill bottle says the same thing.

Prozac is a SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors class of drug also known as Fluoxetine. This drug is actively used for the patients suffering from various anxiety conditions as an antidepressant. Some of the medical conditions in which there is use of Prozac include panic and anxiety disorders, OCD or obsessive compulsive disorder, PMDD premenstrual dysphoric disorder , depression related disorders, etc. This drug works on the human brain balancing any imbalance in the amount of neuro transmitters which result in all kinds of anxiety disorder in brain. Among the major side effects of the imbalance of these chemicals there are PMDD, OCD and panic attacks. Also some patients are advised to use this drug in combination with drugs like Zyprexa in the treatment of conditions like bipolar disorder which is also known as manic depression. There are several other benefits of this drug and you can consult your doctor about the effectiveness of this drug.

I'm in the exact same situation, got Fluoxetine instead of Prozac, I sometimes have difficulties with generic products because of the inactive ingredients but I'm very sensitive to things like that, lots of people have reassured me that the active ingredient is identical so I wouldn't worry. I too prefer name brand over generic, there is something comforting about it but I'm sure you will be perfectly fine on this, they wouldn't let you take it as a substitute prescription if it wasn't almost identical x Hope you get on well with it and will be thinking of you x

No...generic meds must be proven to the FDA that the active ingredient is the same. While the shape of pill, taste, color, or inactive ingredients vary...the effect is identical. There is no benefit to get prozac brand name, over generic.
