My dog has dandrift...?

My dog has horrible dandrift. He's a black lab mix, about 7 months old. I tried buying him no flake moisturizing shampoo, but it doesn't seem to have helped after the last two baths. I checked for fleas and lice, just incase. But there was none.

Update:

I don't over bathe him.... He gets bathed once a month, sometimes every two months.

Sorry for the spelling...

Update 2:

And the smell isn't why I bathe him either. Usually he gets pretty dirty, like covered in mud.

Are you sure it's not dirt or dust? I heard lemon helps....

He probably has DANDRUFF (note spelling) from being bathed too often. At 7 months, he should not have had more than one or two baths in his life, if that. People get dogs, then discover that they naturally smell somewhat unpleasant, and proceed to overbathe them. If you can't stand doggy odor, a lab is not the dog for you! Stop the bathing, and get Pet-Tabs F/A from your vet to restore the natural oils to your dog's skin and coat.

ETA: If he gets muddy, rinse him in plain water. No shampoo needed if it's just mud and soil. I've owned shorthaired dogs for decades. None has ever had a bath more than once a year, some never.

Dogs have been around a lot longer than soap has!

Look at the ingredients list on the food you feed. Is there corn? Wheat? By products? If those are present the food is most likely the reason. You just need to put the dog on a good quality food, gradually. Look at the ingredients lists. Meat (not meal) of some type should be the first ingredient. There should be no corn, wheat or by-products. Innova, Wellness, Orijen & Merrick are a few of the good brands out there.

Overbathing could be the culprit. Dogs only need baths every couple months.

Is the air dry where you are? Get a humidifier.

you may be bathing him too often. that will dry out the skin & coat. only bathe every 4 to 6 weeks, any more is too often.

brush him to loosen the dander & use a dry sheet to wipe of any dander that has come to the surface.

you may want to get a conditioner to go with the shampoo. one that will condition the coat & skin. check at your local pet store.

It is that time of the year with forced air heat and all.

Perhaps a bit of fish oil in his food?

They also make a fur/skin oatmeal conditioning spray.

Also too many baths will make the condition worse.

My BC has it too...(winter in the USA and forced air heat)
