Effects of Growth Hormone?

Growth hormone promotes hepatic production of Insulin-Like Growth Factor; however the metabolic effects of both GH and IGF1+2 seem to be antagonistic to each other;

GH :

- promotes lipolysis + fat mobilisation and increased ketosis

- increased hepatic gluconeogenesis

- decreased glucose uptake and utilization by cells

IGF 1+2:

- Increased uptake of glucose and glycolysis and glycogenesis

- Lipogenesis and protein synthesis

Why are the metabolic effects of both opposite to each other and how does help regulate growth and metabolism?

Cheers

    Depends on where the hormones work. The whole purpose of this is to get the glucose from the liver to the rest of the body. Glucose production and release should only happen in the liver, while the rest of the tissues take in and use up that glucose. When GH acts on the liver, the hepatocytes increase gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, releasing glucose into the blood. This is pretty obvious, since the job of the liver is to provide glucose to the rest of the body. The liver also releases IGF, which acts on IGF receptors, distributed in other tissues. In those extra-hepatic tissues, the glucose released by the liver is taken up and used in glycogen synthesis and glycolysis.

    any time you have opposite effects you have a balance. that the balance determines the effect.

    metabolic regulation and growth amount depend upon which has the upper hand.

    amounts go up or down based upon the amount.

    self balancing systems, create or limit the amount of a function, by making a product that self limits their original function.

    you do not want to grow out of control, like gulliver seemed compared to the tiny people he meet on his travels, nor do you want to be unable to develop to the maturation of a person. balance is often very important. not overdoing.

    exercise is useful, but you can collapse if you try to run from new york to chicago, at some point you might get tired. hello? balance is useful, and the body has other examples of self limiting systems. also certain systems are only able to make more growth until certain conditions change with age.
