Puppy Training Revised.?

Alright, I saw half the answers and got half the same gist, let me clear some things up---

A. The puppy is not secluded from us. We love him and play with him often, the only time he's never in contact with someone for more than an hour is at night. When he's outside, we go out and play with him, and let him out.

B. The dog is 5 months old. He can hold his pee for a while, and has shown us that. He doesn't go when he's around us.

C. When we bring him inside and leave him alone, it's in a puppy proof room where he cannot get another or harm himself or break anything. At the same time, he has plenty of toys. We did this because it's been storming alot and we didnt want to force him to be in his kennel every time it's storming. Someone comes down every hour to let him out. There's no way he has to go every half hour or less, he doesnt have problems holding it when were with him.

D. He only goes when he is ALONE in the house. I can take him out and get him to go to the bathroom, and sit with him for 3 hours after that, and he not go. But if I take him out and then leave him alone for 15 minutes, he will have gone.

E. He doesn't whimper or whine or show any signs of being scared when alone.

F. We have crate trained him, and he does have a crate. He sleeps in it at night and it's also used for travel.

G. We have everything set up, feeding and stuff scheduled. That is not the problem.

H.He practically lives in that room. When we got him, He stayed in that room 24/7. We're trying to get him used to being outside during the day because he is a large dog. (Black Lab/great Dane mix)

I. Again, He's not secluded from us anyway. The whole problem here is he has to be alone while it storms, and a storm can last for a pretty long time here. Often times the storm is going on while the children are at school, and I do not have time to watch him all the time, I work at home and he tries to eat the cords to my computer. I don't want him to be shoved in his crate every time it starts to storm, so we set up the room. Again, The only problem is the housebreaking. He only goes in the house when he is alone.

Update:

Again, he's crate trained. The problem is if he's crated every time theres a storm he won't get to run at all, and will just be hyper as hell.

    Hi =D

First you need to invest a dog litter box in the house. This type will works great!

You need to put news paper at the bottom, so it can soak up the pee. Then when he poop, it will stay in the mesh. Just pick it up and brush the mesh. Change the news paper once a day.

In B you said that your puppy can hold his pee, but still goes when he is alone. This is sign that he is feeling alone. It's true that you love the dog, and your family certainly have spent a lot of time with the dog, but to him it's never enough. Dog is a pack animal, and he would want to follow you to every where. So when he can't he will do something to get your attention. He know that when he pee/poop on the floor people will come. When my dog was a puppy, we didn't puppy proof the house or any room. We just let her go anywhere, except two of our rooms, because of her fur, but we keep the door open so she can see us.

I get very irritated when people tell me that I should puppy proof the house. They are being tooo protective. It's like now the park being too safe for children.

The first time my family went out and left her alone in the house, she pee every where and total of 8 poops! We punished her, and told her to sit right beside one poop (she knows, and was very guilty), then back to her cage. After a few months, she gain more security, and never does that again. I guess because she was afraid that she was abandoned again.

Well I guess this is only matter of time. Your dog is still new to your house. My dog took almost a year to settle. The first 6 months were a lot of works!

    Hope things get better!

I guess I'm a bit confused as to why this pup HAS to be kept alone in a room whenever it storms..especially given the fact he's made it pretty obvious that he has some anxiety issues during storms. Sticking him in a room by himself, no matter how well set up it may be, is not going to fix the issue, in fact it is probably making his anxiety even worse. Many Great Danes have a severe fear of storms. If you live in an area where this is frequent, and you cannot be with him during the storms, then I suggest you get in touch with a reputable behaviorist, NOT A TRAINER, who is familiar with both Great Danes and fear issues. If it cannot be modified through normal methods, he may require other means such as anxiety medication or thunder shirts for example. His pottying in that room is obviously not because he's not trained...it is due to his anxiety. Sticking him in there and not working on this is going to make the problems worse, not better...so I do strongly suggest finding someone with experience in this area. GD's can bloat VERY easily when that upset. Is it really worth risking death to keep him in that room during a storm?

If he's going in the home whenever he's left alone, even if there is NO storm, then again..this is a separation anxiety issue you're dealing with. You say he "practically lives in that room"....yet continue to say he's not isolated. Unless you're living in that room with him then he is indeed isolated and if you know about GD's, you should know that they NEED to be close to their people. They are NOT outside dogs, no matter how warm it may be, they are dogs that can and easily do get stressed and worse...when left to their own devices. That is something we all must accept before bringing home any dane...the possibility that we might not end up with one who is independant and fine on their own for long.

I really don't know what else to tell you..the answer is right in front of you. The dog has some anxiety and it needs to be worked on.

Make definite you get your dog constant to deliver it an extended existence span and to give up puppy overpopulation! Make definite to instruct your dog fundamental instructions (ALL puppies will have to recognize matters like sit down, down, keep, depart it, take it, off, and so forth). If you want aid with this please sign up for dog categories! Make definite you purchase a well great puppy meals. This can be costly however its valued at it. Cheap meals are like feeding rapid meals at all times, they do not have the right vitamins and minerals. Since they do not have the right nutrients in them puppies consume plenty extra of the meals, which means that extra poop. Expensive meals have so much greater nutrients so puppies do not have got to consume as so much, this implies much less poop and despite the fact that its costly the bag lasts plenty longer. To assess what meals is well, ask any individual at a puppy retailer to aid you or learn the elements (meat will have to be the factor for a minimum of two, ideally three of the primary five elements). Hope this is helping, seems like you're going to be a first-class puppy proprietor!

Again, you need to crate him, when you can't,supervise him, day or night. Google crate training. It's not just for nights and when you aren't home. It's a very effective potty training method.
