Puppy got Neutered... A strange question.?

My puppy got neutered last monday, and I have a strange question, that may sound strange. I thought, when neutered, dogs stop humping things, and didn't get erectons. My puppy has done both. Sorry if I'm wrong, I just that was part of the point of getting a dog neutered, so they would stop humping things.

Preventing humping isn't the primary reason that most people have their dog neutered, the primary reason to neuter a dog is to prevent unplanned puppies, and there are many health considerations as well. See the website I included at the bottom for more information.

Some of the other responders are right. As the hormones in his system decrease over time he will have less of an impulse to do certain hormone related behaviors, but depending on the individual dog some behaviors may not be stopped entirely. Mounting, humping, spraying (or marking territory are effected by testosterone so they are called testosterone mediated behaviors, but they are not entirely dependent on testosterone.

Testosterone mediated behaviors *usually* decrease significantly with neutering, but this isn't always true and even when it is true it doesn't mean the behavior will stop altogether. Testosterone is primarily produced in the testes and the epididymus, which are both removed when your pet is neutered. However, testosterone is also produced elsewhere in the body including in the brain and adrenal glands. So testosterone will not be completely eliminated from his system simply by having him neutered.

If testosterone mediated behaviors are not reduced to your satisfaction there are other methods that you may utilize including behavior modification and certain anti-testosterone drugs that your vet would need to prescribe.

    Good luck with your puppy!

Humping and erections are not stopped through neutering. It is instinct to want to breed. Neutering only makes a dog sterile.

Haha! I have 3 male dogs and neutering certainly does not stop the humping or showing his "lipstick". It does stop them from impregnating other dogs though - which is the only reason for neutering.

I basically have not had the middle to submit it back.

It will take a little while for the hormone levels to drop. Neutered dogs can still achieve erections and can also mate and tie with a female dog, they just can't reproduce.

It will take up to a year for all of the testosterone to get out of his system and no that is not true. What he is doing is called dominating. He just unable to breed anymore and won't be able to detect a female in heat. But they can and will continue to hump to dominate another dog.
