How do I use hedge balls?

Hedge balls or hedge apples. Little green balls, the size of an orange. They're supposed to ward off spiders. Do I just throw them in the corner, or do I have to prepare them first?

You can place them (whole) on a piece of foil and put them on the floor in the basement, or the garage or wherever you want. The will eventually begin to decompose, so you want them on something you can just pick up and throw away. It's the gases and chemicals that are given off during the decomp process that wards of spiders, and supposedly mice. When they are all brown and shriveled, they have done their job and you just toss them out.
