Got braces yesterday---Need some tips on flossing?

Well I got braces yesterday, and of course, they hurt. I'm trying hard to brush and floss often so I don't have to prolong keeping braces like my brother did (he never brushed his teeth) and to keep from that thing that can happen with like the stains..

They gave me a few things to floss with. A thing called super floss, which has a hard end to thread through the braces and a fluffy end to go between your teeth. Another thing which is like those regular flosser things, like the stick with floss across it, but one ends smaller to fit by your braces. And then regular floss.

It seems I'm not coordinated enough to get the floss and super floss by my braces wire xD I always look in the mirror and it takes me about 5 minutes just to weave it in to floss one tooth.

The flosser thing doesn't work as well as it says, I can fit the edge between my wire and my teeth, but it's not that great for flossing.

    Braces 101

    1) be patient -flossing wasn't so easy for me either just be patient and the slow you go the faster you pick up the pace

2)type of floss- used the one that looks like a tennis racket without the wire thingys in the middle and inserted the regular floss in the whole then flossed as instructed

3)food-i reccommend drinking shakes or something smooth for your teeth because on the first few days the braces are unconfortable and the pressure hurts

    Goodluck.Hope this helped.

My son just got braces and he was having a hard time flossing with them. While I was shopping at Walmart in the oral care isle, i noticed a new product that is designed to work with braces. It is a floss pick and it fits under the braces wire- I bought a bag of 75 for under $3.00. They are called DenTek Braces Clean Floss Pick- let me just tell you- I only wish they had these when i was younger and had braces! my son can floss his braces with no problem at all, not to mention- his hygienist was so excited that he was doing such a great job flossing! I looked the product up online when I got home and found the company website- www.DenTek.com

Your teeth will hurt for the next few days so I suggest eating extremely soft foods- ice cream, mashed potatoes, soup, pudding, etc. Also, whenever you go in for an adjustment your teeth will probably hurt for a day or two. I can not stress enough how important it is to take care of your teeth, especially when you have braces! Brush your teeth twice a day, and even after every meal if possible. Flossing is key, it's the only way to get between your teeth and it will prevent gingivitis and puffy gums. Everyone wants a beautiful, straight smile so be sure to do everything your orthodontist tells you. Good luck! :)

When I got braces, I got a packet full of floss threaders. Those things suck, IMHO. I just take the floss and push it up under the wire and floss that way.

    -Be patient

-You also should have gotten a proxy brush. It's like a little Christmas tree, you stick it under the wire and twist it around, and it gets food out of your teeth.
