What do you feed your ferret?

Probably gonna open up a can of worms, here.

But I just got my first Ferret a couple of days ago, and I'm a little unsure what to feed him as far as dry foods go.

I live in Australia, so commercially prepared ferret foods are not easily accessible.

At the moment he is being fed on supercoat for cats, but I want to get him a higher quality food.

Was thinking of Felidae grain free- but there is a small amount of fish meal in this mix so i'm not sure if it's ideal- but it is also very high in protien and fat, and low in fibre compared to any other cat food I have looked into.

Does anybody else feed their ferret this? If not, what do you feed your ferret?

(Bearing in mind I can't import ferret food)

I am also going to suppliment his diet with fresh meat daily including mince, chicken necks, and frozen mice/rats.

Please keep in mind that ferrets are obligate carnivores and cannot digest fruits and veggies. Feed them a mix of two or three brands, because older ferrets are very picky and will starve themselves rather than try a new food. If one food gets discontinued, they will still have the other brand.

You can also feed raw. Start with minced meat, then go to chunks, then bigger chunks and eventually whole chicken wings, bone and all. You can also feed frozen rats, mice, quail and chicks. You can also live feed mice. Feed raw twice a day, morning and night.

    Hope it helps.

I don't like the fact that people think cat food is good enough to feed a ferret. I think you should NOT feed cat food to your ferrets unless it's only temperary. So I'm glad you are looking for a higher quality food!

I have fed my ferrets many different kinds of food but I finally stopped searching once I bought this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display...

It has a min. of 38% protein which is great for ferrets. I also had problems with my ferrets losing too much weight so I bought this (with min. 20% fat) and they went back to a normal weight in no time! It's also a cheaper food than some others. For 20 pounds, it's only $30.00 (not including shipping and handling). My ferrets also LOVE this food. With four ferrets, I always had one or two who wouldn't accept a certain food, but they all love this stuff!

Hope this helps! Good luck finding some healthy food for your ferrets =)

I love 8in1 ultimate and Wellness Core for cats. Its easy to feed kibble and still be 'grain free'...you do not have to feed raw to avoid grains. Check out a ferret food chart for more info.

Cat food is perfectly fine to feed your ferrets. That's what I feed them as well because it is cheaper than ferret food, and still gives them the nutrients they need. Another thing to feed your ferret is they also enjoy hard-boiled eggs. You don't have to remove the shell,as it will not harm them, but it is ok to take it off as well.
