How often should I feed my new puppy?

The can says for a dog his size (He's under 10 pounds, Black Lab, 8 weeks old) about a can and a half of food should be given to him. I was guessing that meant for all you feed him, a max of a can and a half a day. How often should I feed him? Yesterday I fed him a whole can in the morning, and half a can in the evening, Should I just continue doing that, or does he need to be fed more often, like half a can in the morning, afternoon, and evening?

Well whatever amount of food indicated on the can is supposed to be the amount given to him in one day. You can divide that amount into 2 or 3 meals. I usually feed my dog around 7am and 8pm. This is just an approximate time. You shouldn't be very punctual when feeding him, because if you keep it too consistent then he may whine or start destroy things when you don't feed him on time. For me some time I would feed him at 6am and maybe 7 or 9pm.

For now when you give him food, he must stays still before you set the food down. This is the start of obedience training, since he is still a baby. Later you will ask him to sit before you set the food and finally wait until you give him permission.

Also, I wouldn't feed him can food, because can food can cause teeth problem later. But, since he is small you can keep feeding him can food, until around 3 or 4 months, then you feed puppy chow. I fed mine Royal Canin puppy food. It was recommended by the breeder. When my dog just came she was around 3 months already, and a vet told us to mix the solid food with a kind of milk powder (and warm water), because she had digestive problem. That smell soo good, even I would want to taste it (didn't eat it of course).

From my memory, my dog ate a lot when she was a puppy, and less when she grew up. If you don't really have an idea how much he should eat, then see how many times he poops in a day. My dog used to poop like 2 times a day. One time she opened a bag of food and ate most (I was surprised how much she ate around 4 months old) she poop like 8 times in a day!

    Edit:

If he has any left over food, take the food away until the next feeding time. I don't remember why, but this was what the dog trainer told me to do.

    Have fun!

My 3 month old puppy eats a cup of food for breakfast, half a cup for lunch, and a cup for dinner, usually he leaves some leftover, but he'll finish it later after he plays and poops and all that.

Puppies usually need to eat 3 times a day until their a year old, and I have mini dachshunds, so they really can't be getting fat, so I usually take up food when their done, because the breed will literally eat until they burst, especially when their puppies and don't know any better!

Once in the morning and one around supper time. For example I feed my dogs at 8 every morning and around 5 at night. With a few treats throughout the day. I think you should feed him equal amounts at both times but that's just my opinion.

You need to consult your vet for this answer. Puppies need to be fed 3-4 times a day, and fed a good quality puppy food. Canned food id not the best because it has a tendency to just stick to teeth and cause them to rot.

Dry food like Taste of the Wild,Nature's Choice is one of the best for puppies.

2 times a day is good for him. if your only feeding him once a day give him the whole recommended serving. a couple dog treats throughout the day won't mean he'll get overweight either.
