This is might sound weird but can an athiest be Catholic.I mean if the source of all charity is God,and if atheists give to the poor out of caring and or compassion, does this mean that they are doing Gods work in a sense?

You do good because Holy Spirit of God is in you , and NOT you do good to find God.

God does not demand you to do good work to earn His blessing and salvation, God wants you to receive the finished work of Jesus Christ, and the rest will come automatically to you.

    Shalom,

A Christian may believe that the Atheist is doing God's work whether they believe in God or not, but it's possible to do good things and have compassion without believing in God, a lot of Atheists are Humanists, a simple explanation of this is living by a set of moral codes and trying to be a good person towards your fellow man without having any kind of religious affiliation, though the moral codes are often similar to those of Christianity and other religions.

Technically, no an Atheist cannot be a Catholic, but I think being Catholic covers more ground than a belief in God, it has it's own unique cultural significance, and you'll often find that people brought up as Catholics but who are now Atheist still observe certain aspects of that culture and apply a reverence to some of the rituals even if they don't strictly believe in them. A good example of this is a joke made by the Irish comedian Dara O'Briain....'I'm staunchly Atheist, I simply don't believe in God, but I'm still Catholic of course' although he was joking, I think there's a lot of truth in that statement.

I additionally each now and then sign my replies as from a Catholic atheist, or greater in many circumstances an atheist Catholic. For me that is as a results of fact i replaced into raised Catholic and stay in a predominantly Catholic . over the years I became a lapsed Catholic and finally got here to the tip that there is no God yet I nevertheless come across with Catholics and abhor the anti-Catholic bashing which you spot here each from time to time. I additionally come across slightly humor in utilising the obtrusive oxymoron.

If you give to the poor or help anyone in anyway, you are doing God's work. Why would an atheist ever be a Catholic? Catholics believe in God and atheists dont

Not an actual catholic. And definitely not in the way you're presenting it. It's insulting for you to give credit to your imaginary friend whenever someone is being charitable.

An atheist might be a lapsed catholic, and identify with the culture surrounding Catholicism, just like there are people who are culturally Jewish but don't adhere to Judaism.

I've seen this one guy on here claiming to be a Christian Atheist. Apparently it's someone who believes in Christianity, but minus the god. So I guess someone can be a Catholic Atheist? Never heard of the likes of that before this person mentioned it though.

Interiorly quite a few of them are. Yet, the chief means by which we satisfy God for the temporal punishment due to sin are: Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving, & the patient suffering of the ills of life.

Atheists believe not in punishment for sin, nor the need for remission of sin. A Third Grade Catholic child has memorized these spiritual works in Catechism One.

The chief spiritual works of mercy are: To admonish the sinner, to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubtful, to comfort the sorrowful, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive all injuries, and to pray for the living and the dead.

The chief corporal works of mercy to Mankind are: To feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to ransom the captive, to harbor the harborless, to visit the sick and to bury the dead.

Ask yourself now if atheists would fit into the categories of prayer & spiritual woks. They mostly are involved in corporal works of mercy to humanity, not works beneficial to their souls or to obtain the medicine of the Divine Physician.

No, to be a Catholic, you must adhere to the creeds, they are basically the foundation of our faith.

I don't even need to put the whole thing,

We believe in one God, that is the first line. If you don't adhere to that, you simply aren't Catholic.

While there may be more, I do know of 5 people at my workplace who dont believe in any gods, but call themselves catholic because of their upbringing.

Atheists give to charity, but its not from any god, its because we are human and humans are capable due to evolution of sympathy and empathy.

A person can be culturally catholic but not believe in it.
