The speed of the operating system has a lot more to do with how well it's designed than with how much space it takes up on your hard drive. Windows 7 is designed to make better use of your hardware, that's why it can run faster on some computers than XP.

Windows XP is very old, even ancient by today's standards, doesn't support many new games and other software, has a lot of unpatchable security flaws, etc. Go with Windows 7.

Those specs will run Win7, but it depends upon the exact components in the PC. Go to Microsoft's website and download the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. This is a small application that will scan your system and tell you if your hardware is compatible, and recommend which version is best as well as letting you know what may need to be upgraded.

The reason you don't see all of your RAM is because you're running a 32-bit OS, which can only see around 3.5GB of RAM. If you have 4GB or more, you need a 64-bit OS. The fact that it will be able to address more RAM means it should be faster, at least when it comes to things that require RAM. Your best bet is probably 64 bit Win7 Home Premium - the 64 bit version of XP was pretty buggy.

Don't blame the answer for a poorly formed question.

What do you mean by "better?"

As a general rule run the original OS unless you have a very good reason for upgrading. Even then, were you able to find drivers for everything in Windows 7? Do not expect an 32-bit system to recognize more than 3.2-.4 GB of RAM. Expect more trouble with your setup since the installed limit is 4 GB.

Bottom line - yes, Windows 7 is "better" until you run into a hardware problem, and almost all systems the age of yours have hardware problems. Choose the system that works right.

use Windows 7 it's much faster and more reliable and ur computer reads 3GB of RAM only because u're running a 32*bit of Windows, get Windows 7 64*bit so it can read ur whole 5GB and ur PC seems to be able to run it so, I recommend u get Windows 7 :)

    hope I helped :)
