anti-depressant advice?

I have been extremely depressed for the last 6 months. I know the reason, but it isn't something I can change curently. I have tried everything to get my mood changed-exercise, prayer, meditation, working my butt off, being around people, proper diet, laughter, the whole thing. I have a fleeting sense of happiness, but when it's quiet, all the sorrow comes back.

So....I am looking into an anti-depressant/anxiety drug to help. I was prescribed Prozac 20 years ago, and I had an adverse effect from it. I have friends who have tried suicide being on Seroquel, so i am leery of that as well. I have heard that Wellbutrin may work, with fewer side effects than some.

What have you found that helps with major depression? And have any of you taken Wellbutrin? If so, how does it work for you? Thanks for kind and honest answers.

unfortunately its really just a matter of trial and error, everyone reacts to each medication differently. The best person to ask which medication that would be best for you is to ask your doctor. If Prozac didn't work then you might want to try Zoloft or Celexa. keep in mind when starting an anti-depressant SOME people may get worsening depression and feel suicide. If this is you then call your doctor right away. Most of the time This is only temporary and should go away. It takes a few weeks before you start to feel better

    Hope that helps!

I took wellbutrin only briefly last July, 2-3 weeks. The nervousness/tension was so bad it almost caused a nervous breakdown. I quit it and quit going to my clinic until after a clinical psychologist evaluation/diagnosis I had to go through trying to get disability (I didn't get that). HE said I'm not bipolar so I threw all my meds away.

I am still depressed/stressed by life events (family life mainly), but I'm trying to get them under control and get the house more in order.

Meds work for some people, then not for others. You just have to try and be very careful about it.

Wellbutrin's main purpose/use is as a stop smoking drug I've heard.

I stay busy with penpals and things, Bible study, get sunlight/air outside when I can. Exercise helps especially if you are someplace pretty like a park or lake. Having someone with similar troubles to talk to is also good.

    So sorry to hear that!!

Many people will tell you of different kinds of anti-depressants, as indicated above.

Yet another not listed is Zoloft. Thing is, you may need to be tried out on different ones, give it a month or two, to rule out side effects, and go from there.

Sounds to me like you are doing nearly everything you can. You may add prayer into the mix. I found my sanity again that way.

If you just need an older experienced person to talk to, you may email me, and I will respond in truth and love.

In the meantime, in the quiet times, your sorrow should be the last thing to return. Perhaps your mind, "the committee," is working overtime, in those moments which should be peaceful. I could say during those times, "let go and let God" give you the peace you seek so much.

I pray for your inner peace to come more often, and that you are blessed with the Lord's love.

I take wellbutrin currently for major depression. I don't think it works very well - I am going to ask my doctor about going back on Paxil, that one has worked the best for me. the Wellbutrin did help me lose weight, though.

Remeron worked for a while too, but then stopped..

    have you tried NLP?

you can get a self help NLP book and do the techniques in the book for depression if there are no NLP therapists around you or you just rather do it yourself.

i saw a video of a non functional man with depression and quilt treated with NLP techniques and he got better fast. not months but in only a few sessions.

plus sustained happiness is an illusion. the only people who are seemingly happy all the time are people who can divert their attention constantly thru activity. or put simply. life is constantly somewhat depressing and unsatisfying. people who think it's not are delusional and think pills solve the problem.bs.

I've taken Wellbutrin year and years ago- had a VERY bad allergic reaction to it.

Elavil in combo with celexa may give you relief though

Prozac was the first Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) on the market. Seroquel and Welbutrin are more recent SSRI's , so you should expect similar (albeit somewhat decreased) side effects to those you had with Prozac.

I am not a big proponent of SSRIs. They were originally developed to treat acute depression (which normally lasts less than 30 days,) to help the patient survive suicidal inclinations during this crisis period. They were intended for SHORT TERM use, meaning less than 30 days, but since it takes 6 weeks to build up to full efficacy in the bloodstream-(by which point most of the people for whom it was developed would have already passed the crisis period,) most people who start on SSRIs end up being on them for years.

Still, many people have had success with them. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the US alone that have been taking them for years with manageable side effects. There are currently more than 60 SSRIs marketed, and I remember one individual in particular telling me that Prozac saved his life.

One popular means to deal with SSRI side effects is through use of the herbal “Ginko Bilobal”. This herb is also marketed as a memory enhancer and lab tests seem to indicate that it increases ATP production in glial cells. I for one think that this is because it acts as a serotonin reuptake enhancer-doing exactly the opposite as the SSRIs. Many people who take Ginko daily for extended periods of time will find that it INDUCES depression.

Combining herbals with pharmaceuticals can be dangerous though. Yohimbe, for example is marketed as a muscle builder and testosterone enhancer. What they don’t tell you in the marketing though is that it also contains a MonoOxidaseAmine Inhibitor, and mixing MAOIs with SSRIs can be fatal.

Before taking any medication, read the literature on it at:

    http://www.rxlist.com/drugs/alpha_a.htm

pay special attention to the big bold lettered warnings that pharmacists and prescribers usually forget to mention.

I’d also recommend seeing the comedy movie “Brain Candy” by Kids in the Hall, a parody about the development and distribution of SSRIs over the years, which in retrospect was somewhat prophetic, especially since they’ve started marketing them for animals.

Finally, I’d like to remind ye that depression and sadness are normal human responses. It is NOT normal to want to kill yourself though. You really should only pursue treatment (pharmaceutical or otherwise) if you are afraid of becoming suicidal or it is making your life unmanageable. Normally, the best way to deal with emotional pain is to embrace it, explore it, and appreciate it as a means of better self knowledge and self improvement. Remember, the heights of joy you can feel is limited only by the depths of anguish you have felt for comparison.

I have been taking Paxil for almost a year now for major depression. It has worked wonders... The only problem is if you miss even one pill you will experience withdrawal symptoms(which are hell) but besides that it has been a miracle drug for me.

    Dear Kat,

I would strongly suggest you read the article about depression at this website below.

Regarding your medication. You need to speak with your physician about this. Or speak with a different psychiatrist about this and get a different opinion.

    Take care
