Why has the moon remained low in the sky tonight?

I have been enjoying the night sky a lot over the past few months. In January or February I noticed the moon would travel across the sky and be above my house or on the other side of the house right before I went to bed, which was in the very late night/early morning hours. Now, I look outside at 1 in the morning and the moon hasn't moved. Why?

The Moon rises later and later each day, but repeats itself every 28 days. The Moon is moving.

  • I think what's more likely is that you're seeing the moon crossing the sky, but remaining relatively low in the sky. The moon's orbit is not in line with Earth's equator. Its inclination changes, which is why there isn't always a solar or lunar eclipse when the moon passes in front of/behind the Earth. Sometimes it will cross the sky very high above the horizon, meaning that someone in the other hemisphere will see it lower to the horizon.

I'm in Sydney. The gibbous moon was high in our sky. For someone fairly far north, it will be lower towards the southern horizon as it crosses the sky.

Your question is a little vague, but I think your puzzlement probably comes from not realizing that the moon rises and sets not only at different times throughout a month but at different points along the eastern horizon. For instance, one night it might rise at 12:45 AM due east of where you are, but a week or so later it could rise at 1:03 AM more towards the southeast.

    NOTE:

Don't take the times and directions in the above example as etched-in-stone fact because I just tossed them in for illustration.

I can guarantee you that the apparent position of the Moon has moved during the course of the night. If the Earth had stopped rotating I think we all would have noticed by now.
