Activities that develop curiosity, language, sensory exploration, fine motor skills, cause/effect, and so on. As a teacher, I would say to ALWAYS, as much as possible, tie a book to a craft. This incorporates language and literacy skills and brings the book to life. As far a crafts go, keep it pretty simple for a 3 year old. Paint with a variety of instruments...combs, toothbrushes, fingers, bubble wrap, paint brushes, koosh balls. Each item incorporates cause/effect (If I pound the comb it makes dots, if I slide the comb it makes lines). Also, making snacks is an excellent activity (for example, read a book about ants (the ants go marching, etc.) and then make ants on a log. Incorporate great language (the green, crunchy, crisp, stringy celerey), the sticky peanut butter, and count the raisins (ants) with your child. Then enjoy the snack. Allow your child to play with water, shaving cream, ice cubes...all of this is great. Be creative. It is about the PROCESS, not the PRODUCT.

3 years old like discovery play where they can interact on an individual level while being curious. novel items that can hold attention with noise/ music around and moving parts... give them options so they can help themselves between tasks and keep things novel and interesting... something as simple as legos with different colors, sizes and shapes is something novel and stimulating that can keep their attention, as well as objects with moving parts tends to work...

play-dou is fun. and they can make their favorite animal!

or crayons and coloring pages or just drawing

or finger painting but with only the colors red, blue, and yellow (so they can mix the colors)

paint tiny wooden treasure boxes? picture frames?

i'm sorry i don't really know but they're usually happy with anything.
