What is the role of the messenger in Medea?

I know that the messenger isn't a character in it's own right as we are not given details about the character such as his past etc. However, he plays an integral role in relaying the events that transpired after Medea's children handed over the gifts. Can someone help me in explaining the role of the messenger?

The messenger in Euripides' play The Medea plays an essential role. The messenger in the play is a slave of the royal house. He is not a nurse or any other particularly significant role that would, make him stand out against the other slaves. His role in the play is simply a role of a storyteller.
