Does China's economy surpassing Japan's mean anything?

I saw this on AOL news this morning :P But I saw that China is barely ahead of Japan in its GDP, and considering China has about 10 times more people in its population than Japan does, is it really ahead?

No, not really. The relevant measure is GDP per person (per capita), which places China well into the third world.

AOL news are there for entertainment, not information.

It means that the economy of China is growing much faster than that of Japan -- which is not growing much at all.
