Why does a rich man have to give up his possessions to follow God?
besides it says so in the bible, is there a reason that God wants people to be poor in order to show they love him?
And what about the average home owner? should they give their homes away to follow God? What exactly is the Threshold of money that someone can possess and still follow God?

he doesn't. He was doing enough. City people who are financially independent can buy what ever they need. The only threat is the economy, job loss, or divorce.
People who are poor, people who live in the country tending crops or herding sheep depend on fortune and understand what it is to depend on God. City people, average home owners don't know this. At times they think their comfort and well being is their just due for their way of life. This is not true, the economy, a job loss, and sometimes even a divorce is beyond an individual's control, but it always happens to the "other guy" who "must of done something wrong".

Does God love the richest man in the graveyard more than the man who made sacrifices in order to serve im better?
(1 Timothy 6:9-10) 9Â However, those who are determined to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and many senseless and hurtful desires, which plunge men into destruction and ruin. 10Â For the love of money is a root of all sorts of injurious things, and by reaching out for this love some have been led astray from the faith and have stabbed themselves all over with many pains.
(1 Timothy 6:17-19) 17Â Give orders to those who are rich in the present system of things not to be high-minded, and to rest their hope, not on uncertain riches, but on God, who furnishes us all things richly for our enjoyment; 18Â to work at good, to be rich in fine works, to be liberal, ready to share, 19Â safely treasuring up for themselves a fine foundation for the future, in order that they may get a firm hold on the real life.

The exact threshold would be different for diffeent people. Some people feel the need to be totally poor (like priests, monks, nuns). Some people have billions of dollars, but they try to do God's work (provide jobs for people, give money to charity, etc).
Greed is a terrible thing - some people kill their own spouse to get insurance money; BP Oil is letting oil kill the ocean because they wanted higher earnings-per-share; some bosses have fired people so that they don't have to give them a pension... on & on...

The rich man is already living a good moral life by following all of the commandments, but if he wants to be perfect like Jesus, then he must consecrate his entire life to the service of God like Jesus which means dropping everything else and offer his life to becoming his witness of the good news or the gospel.

Kinda like how Buddhists are trying to get rid of material possessions, I mean lets admit it, almost all of our problems are all about who has/gets what
edit: BTW, you are not just giving up your possessions you are giving it to the poor
1 reason will be you dont need anything in order to follow God

Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to give up EVERYTHING that you may have Jesus?
We need God's grace, He doesn't need anything from us. It's us who are in need.
God doesn't require men to give away their possessions.
1. They all belong to God anyway. 2. Salvation is by grace through faith alone.
Edit: The rich man that came to Jesus (I assume this is what you mean) thought in himself that he had kept all of God's commands. Jesus was showing the rich man that He hadn't "loved God with all of his being". The rich man didn't see his own sin. It wasn't about the rich young ruler "giving" all of his stuff away, as much as it was about the rich young ruler being willing to do so, and his recognition of his own inability and need for God's grace.
