Can you be atheist and agnostic?

Maybe when you claim to be atheist and agnostic, it's like saying, "I don't know if there is a god, and I really could care less."

I think honestly, most people throw in the agnostic because they are scared to take that final leap of sensical goodness. They haven't weighed all the evidence, and in their minds, they are playing it safe. There is probably doubt, and if there is, they don't want to be caught saying they completely disbelieve.

I agree with this person's answer 100%. The only difference between calling yourself a theist and atheist is whether you believe in some sort of higher power, agnosticism is just saying you can't know for sure. There was a video on youtube by this dude (Mannix the Pirate if anyone's heard of him) explaining atheism, agnosticism, etc. and it was good but I can't find it now.

Atheism and agnosticism are positions on two separate topics, and as such, do not conflict.

Agnosticism is a position regarding knowledge; specifically, it is the position that it is impossible to have certain knowledge about whether or not god(s) exist.

Agnosticism is compatible with either theism or atheism.

I, as an agnostic atheist, agree that it is hypothetically possible that a god of some sort might exist, but find this possibility so vanishingly remote and so completely unsupported by any reliable evidence that I am unconvinced that any such god or gods exist.

In response to your comment: The thing is, the word "atheist" belongs in my last paragraph, because it is accurate. An atheist is any person who lacks a belief that any gods exist. If a person cannot truthfully state, "I believe that at least one god exists," he is an atheist. He may also be agnostic, but that doesn't diminish his atheism. I have no belief that any gods exist, though I do not find them hypothetically impossible.

Agnosticism relates to knowledge (or lack thereof). Atheism relates to belief (or non-belief). I do not believe in God because I have seen no compelling evidence for His existence, but I do not know whether or not there is such a Being and I readily admit that. Therefore, I am an agnostic atheist. The terms do not exclude each other at all.

No, there not exclusive. Smart Atheists know they have no knowledge of God's existence and choose not to believe in God, hence making them Agnostic Atheists.

To be fair everybody is really Agnostic, only honest people actually state they are. You can also have pure agnosticism as well, where you do not take sides in a belief or disbelief of God and merely state you don't know anything.

Technically, no. An agnostic says it's not possible to know for sure if gods exist. A true atheist has no supernatural beliefs. Anyone calling himself an "agnostic atheist" or "atheist agnostic" is confused.
