helium overdose possible?

My workmate has a friend whose teenage son just died. They do not quite know what happened, but a helium tank was found in his room, and they suspect that had a role in it. They do not know if it was suicide or accidental, since he was alone at the time.

Can a person get high on helium and possibly overdose like this? Does the helium take all the oxygen out of the body and cause death?

Update:

Mr. Know-it-all posed a good question, but yes it was helium. He rode his bike to Walmart and picked up one of those do-it-yourself tanks.

TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING WILL KILL YOU.

(God, I'm getting sick of how often I have to tell people this!)

Helium doesn't take the O2 out of the body, but it does displace it, preventing the oxygen from reaching and binding to the hemoglobin in the alveolar (Lung) tissue.

The secondary gasses contained in industrial grade helium can be equally dangerous.

    Here's a quote from wikipedia:

"Helium alone is less dense than atmospheric air, so it will change the timbre (not pitch[77]) of a person's voice when inhaled. However, inhaling it from a typical commercial source, such as that used to fill balloons, can be dangerous due to the risk of asphyxiation from lack of oxygen, and the number of contaminants that may be present. These could include trace amounts of other gases, in addition to aerosolized lubricating oil."

To me, it's music to my ears/eyes, the more I learn, or try to learn the more I want to know. I seem to be able to store information, and then recall it, or at least discern most answers, and know if they are plausible or not. I do understand what you mean though, the average person can be overloaded, like I feel, every time the government dose talk about the good of coffee, at one point, then in 3 months time designate a new answer on how harmful it is. It can be perplexing to many, as I hate playing games,*I do not discourage this here type of knowledge, it gives me food for thought, I read what they have to say, then decide for myself, what my own chances are/needs are, and it dose not bother me...Many others get discussed, and then throw up their hands *and just walk off, *ignoring the new facts, "I don't," *I ponder it all.

You cant overdose on helium, what happens is; when you breathe in helium, your oxygen is being replaced by the gas. it's the same as carbon poisoning, you basically suffocate to death. Must have been a horrible way to die :(

You would only get lightheaded and dizzy because you're not breathing oxygen.

    You wouldn't get high.

Are you sure it was helium and not Nitrous Oxide?
