new brakes for my car?

The last time I got my oil changed and tires rotated, the mechanic told me that my brakes were worn down to the point that they would need to be replaced by my next oil change? How much would this cost? Seeing as how I'm a chick, I don't really know much about cars. It's an "05 Mazda Tribute if it matters.

If you just need brake pads it should not be too expensive, in the $200 range but it depends on where you are going to have it repaired. My advise would be to get estimates from at least 2 repair shops to get a clearer picture of the cost.
