What was the world like at the time Christ appeared, 2000 years ago?

What were the major religions? Was there a western world/civilization as we know it?

Did Jesus intend to give religion to the non-believers only (who were they?) or to the believers of ancient religions also which are still prominent today?

Update:

Thanks everyone so far. So, Rome was the empire and it was not at all religious then?

And Ok, not religion that Jesus came to give but love of God we might say.

So now I am curious, how Rome became the centre of Catholicism. There was obviously major converting. Probably needs a new question but if anyone can help then...thanks.

I am looking for the religious perspective on how the world was.

One reason is that I wonder why Christianity would need to change existing religions such as Hinduism. Was Islam there at the time? I don't know. As I understand it, there were plenty of people who needed to be saved, but not everyone. There were civilizations such as Hinduism who were doing ok with their religion.

Oh and Yes I saw Life of Brian a long long time ago thanks.

Update 2:

Thanks Grandpa Homer. Excellent answer.

The world has always been basically the same with philanthropists + common people saying : 'Right is might.' and the ruling classes + all self-seekers going about on the basis - 'Might is right.'

The major religions at the time of Jesus' birth : Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, The religion of the Chiinese people.

The people of Euroupe believed in many different gods living in heaven. The Red-indian tribes had their own religions. The people of Africa were nature-worshippers.

There was no western / world civilization as we know it.

Jesus was not interested in 'religion' as such.

He was a lover of God and fellow humans + a master psychologist. [ As a result, he is deeply respected by millions of Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims to whom he is a revered prophet.]

As a lover of God, he said : " Love God - thy Lord with all thy heart, with all thy mind and with all thy soul." (The same idea is found in Hinduism and Islam.)

As lover of humanity he believed everyone can and must love & serve his / her fellow humans, and said : "Love thy neighbour as thyself." ( The same concept is found in all the religions, and is accepted by agnostics + atheists.)

As a psychologist he wanted people to use auto-suggestion + faith in God + faith in oneself to achieve self-confidence, self-improvement, and progress in life.

"Seek, you will find." " Ask, it shall be given."

"Knock, it will be opened." (Concept found in all religions, and acceptable to agnostics + athiests after deleting 'faith in god'.)

Jesus had no idea of founding a new religion. In fact, when confronted with such a suggestion he denied it and said :

"I have not come to destroy, I have come to fulfill. This shows he had hoped that his ideas would be accepted by Judaism and that he had no ideas of replacing Judaism with a new religion.

Unfortunately his assertion of 'Divinity in man' (found only in Hinduism) was 'heresy' in the eyes of the Jewish priests and theologians.

The words of Jesus regarding Divinity in man.

" I and my Father are one."

" Ye are the living temples of God."

Either on his own or through his Indian Guru (The Bible says nothing about Jesus from his 13th year to his 30th. So Jesus could have journeyed to India and learned at the feet of an Indian Guru.) Jesus realized there is Divinity in man, and preached it openly to the horror of the Jewish theoogians.

The concept of 'Divinity in man' is found in the words of Hindus : "Aham Brahmaasmi" + "tat twam asi" (words recorded thousands of years before Jesus was born.)

"Aham Brahmaasmi." ( 'I am God.')

"tat twam asi." (You are that) (Guru's words that the disciple is 'God' himself - meaning that everyone has 'God' inside him / her.)

Knowing that the pathway to God was possible only through the proper Guru, and knowing that he was the one and only Guru available in Israel, Jesus had need to say that one could enter the kingdom of God (that is, realize one's divinity) only through him.

" Carry my 'MESSAGE' to the far corners of the world," Jesus told his disciples.

He DID NOT instruct them to found a new religion different from Judaism, and to convert followers of other religions to the new religion. But the disciples founded a 'RELIGION' in the name of Jesus, justified and glorified his cruel crucifixion (!!!) and have been thrusting their religion down the throats of the followers of other religions (including 'Philosophy + Philanthropy' based religions like Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam) with the aid of political power in the past and economic power + 'mental fear' tactics today !

They know Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam have all the ideals and practices needed for the peace and progress of indiduals + humanity, but keep labouring at converting Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims to their religion which expects people to glorify the crucifixion of Jesus - using the cruel murder of Jesus as their licence to enter the Kingdom of Heaven - literally, not figuratively !

Rome was at the height of its power. Life expectancy was 40-45 years. People routinely died of what we now consider minor ailments. Spirits, gods, and demons were considered the source of most mental and physical illnesses. Not a nice time to be alive.

Rome was polytheistic: They had many gods, most ripped off from the Greeks (who, frankly, had a lot more class).

How some distance faraway from the certainty are you keen to pass in the past you turn around? Jesus mentioned whoa unto the who lead my flock off track...and additionally sins against the holy spirit only isn't forgiven in this existence and the subsequent.... what you are attempting to instruct human beings is doing precisely that, convincing them that Baptism is what you declare it to be....additionally we are Baptized into Jesus ..with the aid of the Holy Spirit...in case you think of it become from John or that he supplies you us forgiveness then you definately are sinning against the Holy Spirit....all of us understand precisely what become being taught and going on with the Early Christians...there no mistaking it ...you could study the Books of the early church fathers...( 1st Christians) who have been taught straight away from the Apostles..those are historic data..and dated beforehand of the top of the a million st century ...with in 40, 50, 60, years after Jesus.. additionally ...Baptism would not forgive all sin ...only the unique sin of Adam and Eve...making an allowance for passage to heaven...yet you could save on with the covenant of Christ to go into Heaven.

The world was much as it is today, but with far less technology. Even people of low income live better than kings of those days. Small comforts we take for granted.

And Jesus did not come to establish any religion. In fact, most of His teachings are against it. He came to save the world and that's what He did. All are welcome to His gift. All one has to to is accept it.

There actually WAS a western-type civilization called Rome.
