Is it possible to record directly from a VHS video recorder to a Sony HDR-SR12 video camera?
this way I can copy old video tapes onto my camera rather than directly to a PC which I don't have access to where the tapes are.

No, I don't think you can. You could try a dedicated converter such as the Kworld DVD Maker, the Pinnacle Dazzle or a generic model you can find in most electronics stores. If you want the best quality, have a look at the Canopus ADVC range.
