How do you choose what book to read next?

I never know what I should read next, and I'm always looking for stuff to read.

So sometimes I go see what's new on Oprah's book club

Other times I ask friends and family what they are reading.

I was just wondering how people decide what they are going to read next.

I ususally compile a list of all the books that I would like to read, and slowly I get around to reading them all.

Sometimes I look on the bestseller list, or if there is a book that is popular and everyone is talking about it, I will usually read it.

I will also read books that I have heard about a few years ago, that I haven't had time to read! eg: I heard about Inkheart a few years ago, and I finally got around to reading it.

    Interesting question!

I seem to buy more books than I can read, so I actually have a backlog of 20 or so books to choose from at a time. I am usually reading 3-4 books at a time and I read a lot of series books and different genres, so when I choose the next book, I look for one that isn't in the same series or genre as any of the other books I am reading. I try to keep reading them in proper series order, but mix up the genres so I don't get confused between similar story lines, characters or plots.

Somehow, I always have something to read next. I kind of just build up this list of books I find interesting and I'll go and buy them even if I have no time to read, because I like buying books. Anyway, after that I have a nice-size selection of books to choose from once I have the time, and I just decide which one fits my mood. Which do I feel most like- a fantasy or a classic? Boy wizard or English manors?

I don't really know where I get all my titles. I think I've picked some up around here. Someone suggested a book by Sarah Dunant (I can't remember the name of the book) and I thought it sounded interesting, so I went out and bought it. I'm also going to get to all of Gregory Maguire's books, so there's like six more to the list. I want to read Neil Gaimon, so there's another seven. I want to read the rest of Jane Austen's works, so there's another four or so. And it just keeps building up.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, good luck on your search!

    A variety of methods:

    * find other books by authors I already have read and liked

    * read about the books/authors that are liked by authors I have already read

    * ask friends, family

    * ask librarians & book shop owners what is popular at the moment

    * select books of best seller lists and book award lists

    * web sites like some of those mentioned above - but also publishers web sites to see what is new & books that are on book club web sites

    * books that movies or TV series are based on that I have liked

    * lists of top 100 books - ABC Book Club, QBD and other sources have theses lists, there are also lists of classic books like Pride and Prejudice

    * I also randomly try new authors and cheap books from second hand book shops

    * Finally, I also try and find new genres and try them.

Have you considered plays as well?

    Good Reading!

Type in the last book you enjoyed and the author and a list will appear of all the books you can choose.

I read a few books from Oprah's book club and I didn't think they were that good - so I choose my own books now.

There's a really wonderful reader's advisory website called:

    www.mybiblionline.com

I used it when I was looking for something to read that would be similar to the types of books I enjoy. You just specify what types of books you enjoy on their online form and they will send you a complete list of however many titles you want that are great matches for your reading interests. I use it all the time. You should try it out!

Oh... and if you sign up for their free monthly email newsletter, they give you a FREE bibliography just to thank you!

Well..... I usually read books that my friends or family have recommended me.

Alternatively, I choose books that are from an author I like.

    Wow.

I'm one of those people that like getting recommendations -- but can never find the time to start, let alone finish, the many suggested media.

On the other hand, when recommendations are slow (or failing, to put it lightly), I turn to the marvelous Oprah's Book Club; because yes, she has many, many great recommendations.

Also, I go to some of my favorite authors' personal websites to see what they're currently reading and greatly enjoyed. I just love those authors that aren't afraid to express who their favorite literary writer is! Or what their favorite book, currently, is!
