President Obama has given his daughters a six month old, black and white, male, Portuguese Water Dog named Bo.

The dog is a gift from Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., who owns several Portuguese water dogs himself.

The president and first lady had said their choice was down to either a Portuguese water dog or a Labradoodle because they were considered good pets for children who have allergies, as Malia does.

The Washington Post reported in its online editions Saturday night that Obama’s daughters chose the name Bo for the pup because first lady Michelle Obama’s father was nicknamed Diddley. The name for the dog was an apparent reference to the singer “Bo” Diddley.

You could possibly read into the choice of of being black and white - Obama is a very conscious of how his every move (and small details) are scrutinized, so choosing a dog that is neither all black or all white was a smart move.

valsacar is leading you wrong. please do not think a husky is an easy breed to have. they are rambunctious, dominant dogs that lose an unholy amount of hair. they shed constantly and need more excercise than most people are capable of providing. I had one and loved him but would never tell a first time owner to get one. i also wouldn't tell a first time owner to get a Labrador or a golden, just because of the shedding issues, which a lot of people are not prepared for. i do suggest you get a dog that is two or three years old, these dogs that have JUST passed completely out of puppyhood and are young but not uncontrollably wild. people think if they get a puppy, they have the chance to raise the dog exactly as they want it to be--but dogs have personalities, just like people. training is the same for a dog as a pup, except a dog is calmer and able to focus on you more. and, you can evaluate it's temperament better, as some dogs don't develop aggression toward other dogs until they are grown.

Portuguese water spaniel, They are suppose to be hypo-allergenic. The girls have allergies to pet dander at least that's been reported.

I have a port. water dog...and i'm trying to give it away. I don't recommend this dog.
