How can I stop eating sugar? It's part of my religion.?

I live in India as a foreigner.

Here I have met very few Indians who understand the dangers of sugar. It's just not widely known.

Everyday I am offered sweets made from milk and sugar which have been offered and blessed in Hindu temple ceremonies. It is respectful to accept them but I have Candida an low immunity.

If I try to take one once in a while it doesn't work because sugar cravings increase after just one.

Fruit is my favourite food so generally I satisfy a bodily need for a bit of sweetness by eating fruit.

So I'm asking if anyone has any physically or psychological helpful methods for avoiding sugar and possibly replacing it with something else. I tried Stevia which seems a great idea but it was so concentrated that the taste was nauseating me.

Any sympathetic Hindus out there who understand the dangers of sugar.

Please no atheistic replies.

I have asked this question in other health sections of YA but hesitate asking in R&S because it may not be entirely appropriate.

Just hoping to find a health educated spiritualist to answer me..

Update:

Thanks for trying so far guysbut isn't there anything that you know is bad for you but you can't refrain from it?

Update 2:

Marj and vegan: Your answers are nice. Thanks for taking the time to write so much. I agree with you wholeheartedly Vegan.

Actually it is true that one only has to honour a little grain of the food or they can even just mentally honour it.

A problem arises out of lack of willpower.

I am also Vegetarian and eat no eggs and prefer to not have dairy. But in India there is such a lack of variety in healthy foods. not even health food shops.

So out of boredom perhaps I eat more.

And a need for healthy sweet food.

I can relate to that putting the biscuits in the fridge for much later.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. It gives me a bit of hope to hear other's points of view. i know I just need more willpower.

Update 3:

I also believe the body is a temple and should be kept clean.

Update 4:

Vegan: Ifeel strengthened by your sweet answer. Thanks so much. We only need sweet words, not refined sugar sweets to be happy!

Marj: Thanks. You can order Stevia on the web. Try searching for D Mannose. It cures UTI which is often the cause of incontinence.

Grela LaTuc: Thanks so much for that info. I'll search for the Gravelans.

I have tried oregano. It is good. Rather expensive. I'm just waiting on a delivery now of a bottle. I'll take your words as a sign that this is something I should continue with. It's easy to give up when things don't work quickly.

Update 5:

Whoops, i wrote the wrong herb name. Meant Gymnena. i never heard of it so i will search for it.

If the following paragraph sounds preachy, I apologize. I'm only explaining what I do and why.

I'm Christian. I became vegetarian, and eventually vegan and more aware about what I was and wasn't eating, because of my faith. (There is a passage in the New Testament that states that our bodies are temples and we should treat them as such. I do not know book chapter and verse, though.) I learned about factory farming and thought that as one called to care for the earth with which God has blessed us. Also, I realized that most of what I ate (processed, high calorie, low nutrient junk) was not in harmony with my natural body. I began to self-educate myself (at the time I had a few free subscriptions to health magazines) and I learned about high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, and even hydrogenated oils long before it became mainstream information.

Replace the junk with fruit. It's healthier and much better for your body. (Though I have some sites that have recipes for healthy cookies and cakes and the like.) I don't know about the food being blessed. However, the Lutheran denomination (of which I'm a member) of the Christian church teaches that in Holy Communion (Eucharist) that if one just partakes in one element (bread or wine) then it is the same as if they had taken both, meaning that they have still communed and all is good (for lack of better phrase). When I was pregnant there were a few times when I did not take the wine and just the bread as grape juice was not offered. (Traditionally, in the Lutheran church, ELCA wine is used, but in some bigger churches grape juice is offered. I went to an ELCA church last night that used grape juice which surprised me.)

I know it can be difficult at first, but eventually, you might look at the sweets indifferently and maybe on occasion take something small. Also, you said that it is respectful to accept them. However, do you have to eat them? If they do not agree with you, and maybe make your illness worse, wouldn't that be worse than not accepting them? My husband eats the cookies and cakes and the like on occasion, but I don't. (Today, after church during coffee hour, he'll have a few cookies. Unless there is fruit there, I won't touch them.) My husband is a pastor and people gave us cookies at Christmas. They are still in the refrigerator. Last week, during the quilting circle (we make quilts for "developing countries" through Lutheran Social Services), I was sent home the two leftover cookies, for my husband. This was after they saw that I didn't take any. Eh. They are in the fridge as well and might stay there for awhile. We'll share them with people the next time they come over.

Anyway, I just hope my experiences help you.

Source(s): ETA: I have had Stevia and I like it. However, if one packet is too intense, just use about half. My husband, who grew up with cookies, candy, cakes, etc. being ample in his home likes the more intense sweet. I did too for a long time because i wasn't used to it and I liked it. I grew up with cookies, cakes, candy, etc. as treats. It was enough of a treat that my mom baked a cake. It was even more special when she put frosting on it. When my parents did bake, they cut the sugar in half. My husband commented on that yesterday, and asked that when I bake to use the full amount of sugar. Again, I hope this helps.

I have the same problem but I'm not in India. I hadn't heard that report on Stevia before. I read that it's the very best thing in sweeteners and it was a long time before I could get it waiting for a health food store to open near by.

So....I don't know the answer either. It's hard to stop eating sugar. I have to take a lot of garlic pills to counteract the effect of sugar and have an intestinal disease. I have to take all kinds of pills to help myself and drink water but that is not a great way to overcome this because I am incontinent (more or less).

If you lived in India, then you may have heard about the Indian plant Gymnema Sylvestre. It is also known as the sugar destroyer. They chew it to alter the way their taste buds react to sugar.

You can find this in health food stores in capsule form. I've taken it several years for my diabetes and have found it very helpful in cutting my cravings and keeping my sugar levels under control. It also helps repair damage to the pancreas.

As for sweeteners, I found a brand of stevia that has fiber in it that isn't too bad. But it's more a case of a trial and error to find what works for you. Just stay away from aspartame (nutrasweet), sucralose (splenda) and High fructose corn syrup, they are very bad for you. Many people are allergic to the first two and it has recently been discovered that among it other problems, hfcs has mercury in it.

PS: for the candida, try oreganol. It's the oil from the Mediterranian oregano plant. It has antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal properties. It really kicks those pesky bugs. And it's not bad when added to foods. You get it at health food stores also, in either the oil or gel caps.

Type 2 diabetes, usually referred to as adult onset, is when your body produces insulin but can not use it properly. This type can be treated successfully with the right diet and exercise in most circumstances. If blood sugars are not kept under control at some point insulin will probably be integrated / oral medications are also available.

People with diabetes can live long, happy lives but must be diligent in their care and make sure you see your endocrinologist on a regular basis.

Diabetes is usually treated through a combination of diet (low sugar), exercise and medications/insulin. Read here https://tr.im/vhPA3

Milder cases can be controlled with just diet an/or exercise while more severe cases require meds or insulin as well.
