Semitism and anti-Semitism?

How in the world did the label of anti-Semitic ever get applied to Middle Eastern people and supporters of Middle Eastern people? Why is it that Eastern Slavic people (who do not follow Judaism) wish to be labelled Semitic?

It is a strange world. How did all this get turned on it's head?

Update:

Hi dandyl,

WOW, you are really smart. I guess I can't argue with someone who gets Best Answer 50% of the time. You are like the Chosen Answerer.

You bring up a great point:

“The Arab world is the last bastion of unbridled, unashamed, unhidden and unbelievable anti-Semitism."

It is really strange to think of that too. So much anti-Semitism in the Semitic centre of the world.

It is a strange word indeed!

Ironically, the Jews (even converts from different origins) are always called "self hating Jews"

But, the Jews who converted to other religion, for some reason lose their "semitic side" and are being called "antisemite"

If that word refers to anyone who is against Jews then it should be "anti Jewish" !!!

Both Arab and Jews hate each other. Both of them are not ashamed to express their "unbridled, unashamed, unhidden and unbelievable" mutual hate. Actually both are proud of what they do.

please nobody try to argue me on who started it. I don't care.

On the other hand, Arab and Jews are both semite and are genetically bound. The conflict between arab and Jews is religious and territorial but not at all a race issue. so the word Antisemitism does not apply here. Jews insist to use it to gain sympathy knowing that the word antisemitism brings up to the memory the Holocaust, A genocide committed by the Nazis and not by the Arab.

(Although most arab do consider Hitler as a kind of a Hero for killing Jews some arab leaders during world war 2 protected jews of their countries.)

Many hate crime are being committed against arab in many parts of the world, in the USA, UK, Australia, ... equally antisemitic description should be applied to such actions. Arabs are semites aren't they.

I think we should update our terminology to describe things as they should be.

    Hate against arab anti-arab racism

    hate against Islam anti-islamism

    Hate against jews anti-judaiism

Hate against Semites (hebrew, arab, and all the other semits because it is not exclusive to these two) ya right call it antisemitism.

    It should be clear now.

Even though anti-semitic refers to hatred of Jews, Semitic actually refers to people from the general middle eastern area, so Arabs are indeed semitic themselves.

The term anti-semitic refers explicitly to anti-Jewish, it was coined by an anti-semite. The term Semitic actually refers to any people of Middle Eastern descent (e.g. Jews, Arabs) or the langauges they speak (e.g Hebrew, Arabic). Whilst Semitic can refer to these people or languages, anti-Semitic is expressly anti-Jewish.

the term Anti-Semitism was coined in 1879 by Wilhelm Marr, an antisemitic spokesman in Germany, to describe the then-growing political movement against German Jews.

you're right that it's a misnomer and has nothing to do with Semites.

some people, notably the distinguished Christian historian of antisemitism James Parkes, use the term "antisemitism" without a hyphen, to emphasize that there is no Semitic entity which the antisemite opposes.

it means anti-jewish, and it always has. you can blame one of the anti-jewish haters for getting it wrong. but then again, antisemites aren't known for being the smartest people.

What does this have to do with Israeli Travel?

THe person who coined it knew that Jews looked differently than europeans in Germany, so he wanted to distinguish them. It is like social segregation. In reality arabs are half shem, half ham so they are not really semitic. But that is biblical aka fairy tale.

Russian jews do follow judaism aka Hasidic movement. It is still a huge population in America (they all moved because polish people hate jews). Eastern slavics do not follow judaism you are right. They follow christianity.

Shadi, for the firs time ever. I have no idea what your post means. It is true that the biggest jew haters out there are jews. Same with muslims. Same with christians. You will often criticize your own origins more than anyone else. Just like you would curse out your brother more than a stranger in the street or afriend.

In my book antisemitism means jew-hatin'

    Plain & simple.

    No Arab or Kurd nonsense.

The term is applied to them jews only.

They earned the title and they feel mighty happy about that.

The term "anti-Semite" was coined in Germany in 1879 by Wilhelm Marrih to refer to the anti-Jewish manifestations of the period and to give Jew-hatred a more scientific sounding name.1 "Anti-Semitism" has been accepted and understood to mean hatred of the Jewish people. Dictionaries define the term as: "Theory, action, or practice directed against the Jews" and "Hostility towards Jews as a religious or racial minority group, often accompanied by social, economic and political discrimination."2

The claim that Arabs as "Semites" cannot possibly be anti-Semitic is a semantic distortion that ignores the reality of Arab discrimination and hostility toward Jews. Arabs, like any other people, can indeed be anti-Semitic.

“The Arab world is the last bastion of unbridled, unashamed, unhidden and unbelievable anti-Semitism. Hitlerian myths get published in the popular press as incontrovertible truths. The Holocaust either gets minimized or denied....How the Arab world will ever come to terms with Israel when Israelis are portrayed as the devil incarnate is hard to figure out.”

You guys need to get your story straight. Those on your side of the debate, who are more educated than yourself, claim the Ashkenazim are Turkic descendants of Khazar converts. While you claim they are simply Slavs the same as Russians or Ukrainians.Science has proven both of these claims to be false. But your side puts little value on truth. So you guys should get together and decide which BS to regurgitate.
