How do you propagate broccoli?
I have a few broccoli plants that have gone to seed; they've been through the pretty phase with all the yellow flowers and now have pods all over them. I now want to use the bed they're in to plant tomatoes, but I want to be able to use the seeds next season. How do I harvest the seeds so that I can use them again?

Do you know if your broccoli plants were hybrid, heirloom or open pollinated? If you still have the seed packet or plant tag, it should say.
If they are hybrid, the seeds won't 'come true', that is, they won't be like their parents, and probably won't be very productive at all.
If they are heirloom or open pollinated, just pick the pods off the plants once they are dry, or shortly before. Then, put the seeds in a envelope, Ziploc or other contain with their name on it, in a cool dry area. Sow them next year like normal.

That is not a good idea unless you have broccoli grown from heirloom seeds. Most commercial crops are hybrids and the seeds will not produce plants that are the same as the parent. In other words, you won't get the delicious broccoli that you raised this season.
