Finding a good fishing job is just like finding any other job, it is a matter of having connections, making yourself marketable, being in the right place at the right time, and plain ol’ dumb luck.

The first thing you got to do is figure out if you can hack it. A lot of people watch the Deadliest Catch from their armchair and think “yeah, I can do that”. Can you handle working on your feet for 18 hours without rest or eating? Can you handle working in mild temps to downright freezing cold in the rain and wind while soaked to the bone? Can you handle the idea of being out in the middle of the ocean all alone (there’s no 911 out there or Channel 16…rescue can take an hour, not minutes)? Fishing can be a very taxing job mentally and physically. If you are up to it, than great!

Second, why should someone hire you? You have to think about who your competition is. You are completing against locals who grew up on the waters being fished. They have basic seamanship skills and knowledge of the areas. This industry is big money and time is precious. What can you offer? Put together a list of what would make you a good candidate. Watch the Deadliest Catch and watch closely what people do on the boats. Can you skipper a boat? Can you read and understand radar equipment, GPS, and weather equipment? Can you tie knots with your eyes closed? Can you weld? Have you fished before elsewhere in the US? Have you working in seafood processing plants? You know anything about diesel repair?

Assuming you think you are a good candidate, where can you get a job?

First, read the information in this website. It has a lot of good information:

    http://www.labor.state.ak.us/esd_alaska_jobs/home....

When a boat needs a crewperson, they usually need one right now. Chances are you are not going to find someone who is going to hire a new person from outside Alaska unless you have some experience in an area they need. If you really want to find a job, you will probably have to be prepared to move to Alaska and be in the right place at the right time.

The state of Alaska has job centers (this is discussed in the website). You can try and call them in advance to see if they can do anything for you. Otherwise, I’d recommend going to Alaska and try getting a job somewhere you can be close to the boats (local bar, dock worker, seafood processor). Spend your freetime networking and letting people know you want to get on a boat.

Alaska is an expensive place to live and good paying jobs are tough to come by. If you go to Alaska, make sure you have a reserve fund to come home or have someone who is willing to pay for a plane ticket home. I’m not suggesting you wouldn’t make it there, but it is best to be prepared.

    Good Luck to you!

There are quite a few mines in Alaska that may hire you to do grunt work (Fort Knox and Livengood come to mind). You could probably work your way up the ladder after a few years. But regardless of how much a job may pay in Alaska, keep in mind the astronomically high cost of living up here! Living in Alaska is pretty much like living on an island... anything not made here has to be flown in or barged in. Moving here is a lot like painting yourself into a corner if you don't have the money to leave. Believe me, just because your paycheck amount may be higher DOESN'T mean you're making more money here. If you really want to make money, my advice is to find a decent job in the Lower 48 in an area with a low cost of living.
