Cheap, decent(ish) vodka?

Hello all,

Usually I drink whiskey, and when I have vodka I either share what my friends have, or buy Smirnoff, which is within my price range (living week to week at the moment, I'm a student)...

However, I'd like to try something else. Can anyone point me in the direction of a relatively cheap, yet reasonable-tasting vodka? Something available in Australia?

Cheers in advance to answerers =)

Barbara is wrong too. Grain is much cheaper than potatoes for making vodka. Someone should tell Chopin that it is cheap potato vodka. Vodka is a cheap and easy spirit to make compared to other spirits. It doesn't require a single species of fragile cactus that takes years to grow like tequila does. It doesn't have to spend 4 years aging in oak barrels like bourbon does - ferment it, distill it and bottle it. The differences come from A. what it is distilled from, and B. the way it is distilled (column, or pot still) and C: how many times it is distilled and how careful, skillful the producer was at all 3 steps. But she's right that at the end of the day, 80 proof is 80 proof, and they're the same strength, and will get you just as drunk. I do sort of take issue with the way you phrased the question - "get you as drunk" as if drunkenness was your destination. You're young, you've got questions - I understand that, and I think drinking can be great fun, but drunk is what you want to avoid. I mean it's sort of like a NASCAR driver, before the race saying he can't wait to get out there today and crash into the wall. No, you're doing it wrong. You want to shoot for that point where you're feeling and enjoying the effects of alcohol. But that's neither here nor there.

    Salutations,

First I will admit, I have not the faintest idea of the offerings to be had in Australia. You honestly had me at whiskey. I have long been a fan of Potables that burn a bit on the way down. Single Malt,Brandy, Gran Marnier. Be that as it may, I have found, in regards to Vodka, the colder the better, I generally keep mine in the freezer when I have it on hand. I would say, I imagine most of the Vodka's available at your local watering hole will probably be considered Top Shelf by the Owners, and how sad for you if this is true. Best of luck in you quest. My Favorite Vodka is tied, Stoli and Absolute. Cheers

i would stick with smirnoff, its probably the best in its price range.

others that are good that are around that price are:

    absolut

    stolichnya

but, the best i have tasted is finlandia, it is a bit more expensive but it is worth it.

smirnoff blue is good also, stronger than red and a bit more expensive but oh so smooth.

top tip for your vodka is keep it in the freezer and then drink it, it goes all thick and is really smooth from the freezer

For reasonably priced vodkas, I choose Skyy for my first choice, Svedka for my second, followed by smirnoff and van gogh. That's just my own opinion, but people certainly provide their own opinions in forums online, so i've found other vodka opinions you might want to check out...

Stolichinaya (sp?) When I drink Vodka, it's usually Grey Goose though..I'm more of a Jack drinker anyway.

  • Svedka

    Russian Shot

    Seagrams

I'm pretty sure you can get Seagrams worldwide but I don't know for sure if the other two are available there. Svedka is from Sweden (very good value) so it might be.

See if you have Prince Igor, Banff, Iceburg, Zytnia, Moskovskaya.

Any of those brands tend to be reasonable.
