i dont think band is different,gsm frequency in europe that is different

gsm in north america has 850/1900,same thing in most asia but some have the european gsm technology with 900/1800,some have both
it is important to note the country you will be going to otherwise you would need a quadri band phone that supports  all the four frequencies

asian countries also use cdma telephony like united states so you can roam with most carriers
