    There is no right answer.

I assure you that smoking does not give anyone cancer or any of the other promised health problems.

But smoking does increase the risk and the more people smoke the greater the risk.

Think of it along the same lines as you would crossing the highway.

If you walk up to the curb and just walk right across the highway with out looking, no one can say 100% that you will be run over and killed.

But not looking does increase the risk so do it again and again. The chances are that you will be hit although who knows maybe you will get away with it and be one of those 80 year olds who say its perfectly safe to not look for oncoming traffic, because he never did.

To any halfwit morons who cant read and are about to have a go at me for my above opinion.

    STOP and read again.

Before you jump on me screaming how wrong it is for me to say that smoking does not give you cancer go back and read the message again and don't stop until you have managed to read the total message, not just a half dozen words.

    Thank yousssss

Hey Hey! There is no right answer indeed. Some people that have never had a cigarette/pipe in their life get lung/throat/whatever cancer.

Smoking any amount (large or small) will increase your chances; but really - it's the luck of the draw. Some people will smoke for years on end and never have a health problem, others will have minimal amounts and develop some kind of health problem. If you have cancer in your family you are more likely to become ill.

It is more beneficial to your health to not have any at all, but we don't live in a perfect world so i guess have as little as possible and hope for the best!!!

"Some people that have never had a cigarette/pipe in their life get lung/throat/whatever cancer" : wrong

Sure many people get cancer without smoking. But some forms of cancer are definitely associated with smoking. Tongue or mouth cancer, which is very dangerous, is solely caused by smoking. Lung and throat - never heard of anyone who got them and didn't smoke.

"Smoking is not guaranteed to bring health problems, just increases the risk" : wrong.

Sure there are people who smoke and don't get cancer or heart attack. But there is no smoker with a radiant skin, there is no smoker who doesn't cough or have heavy breathing, there is no smoker with beautiful teeth, there is no smoker with clean lungs and there is no smoker with clean arteries.

Asto the amount, no one knows. But 3-4 per week will turn to 3-4 per day and then to a pack a day etc. That's why it is called addictive. Even my mum, who supposedly smokes like you say, has breath problems now after a cold she went through, bronchitis that doesn't pass, etc.

The question is: do you want to increase your chances of getting cancer and other respiratory diseases? Before you answer, please take the trouble to visit a pulmonary problems clinic in a hospital near you. If you see the deplorable state these people are at, then answer if you want to do anything to bring that closer to you.

Pipe smoking is the safest form of smoking, as your not supposed to inhale. Don't listen to the other posters here as they have no idea what they are talking about. And pipes burn cooler than cigarettes, the tobacco is not treated with chemicals like cigaretts are, you are smoking pure tobacco. I myself smoke around 4 to 5 pipes of tobacco a week and am as healthy as a horse. I pass my physical at the doctors and he knows I smoke a pipe yet has never told me to quit. He sees the benifits of reduced stress and relaxation I get from smoking a pipe.

    Source(s): me, I smoke a pipe.

Safe amount? No, not really. But less is better, obviously.

A pipe is particularly bad because the smoke is hotter than cigar (and sometimes hotter than cigarette) smoke. Heat causes inflammatory reactions and this is suspected in many types of cancer (e.g. hot beverages causing esophageal cancer).

My recommendation: stop smoking. If you can't stop, switch to nice hand-rolled cigars. Big ones. Smoke rarely.

It depends on how susceptible you are likely to be to Cancer as to how much tobacco you can safely smoke. I do not believe there is a safe amount. The tar from the burned tobacco stains turns your lungs black and is sited in cases of lung cancer. The drawing down of toxins can be attributable in cases of throat cancer. Not forgetting that however much you smoke it makes a huge dent in your finances and you could better spend that money on treating yourself to something more substantial and rewarding.

I don't think it's the amount necessarly , since my Dads been smoking since he was about 13 , and now he's 47 , or so . "/

I think it just depends how strong or weak your lungs are .
