Do Rheumatoid Arthritis flareups cause you to be sick as well as in pain?

I have had rheumatoid arthritis for a long time (since my teens) and when ever it flares up above the usual I get fairly sick as well. I run a small fever, vomiting, headaches and extreme tiredness. All of which can last over a week and can occur every month or so. In some ways its like having the flu with the RA. I have been taking methotrexate for years now. Other drugs either did nothing or made me more unwell (SulfurSalazine) than the methotrexate does. I also drink, and I mean drink, fish oil.

Do others with RA react this way regularly to RA flair ups? Cos I am sick of it myself.

Update:

Thankyou for your comments.

Yes I do go to a rheumatologist. He has trialled me on several drugs, but as I did to the SulfurSalazine I react violently to so many, even the methotrexate gives me grief. He has considered Arava with the methotrexate, although is more inclined recently to try gold, but i have put that off for a month (holidays) as it has a busy management regime and is only effective in 30% of cases he tells me.

As is typical I have had lots of steroid injections in my joints, mainly hands and knees and I take NSAIDs.

I am putting off a shoulder replacement till the pain beats me.

Things like four hip replacements concerns me, just how long do replacements last??

Update 2:

Sorry, per the email answer, by Gold I mean weekly Gold injections

I have RA but I have only had flu like symptoms a few times. I can get huge flares but i don't remember ever having vomiting. The extreme tiredness I had, I also had times that I feel a lot of shivering. I think that is normal for RA. What I don't think should be is you feeling this way so often. There are lots of new meds out there that you should try. Maybe you need a combo. I know it is very difficult and since you say you had this for a while I figure you already know this as well. Do you go to a rheumatologist or your family doctor? Maybe it is time to shake your doctor a bit and let him know that you need more. I am currently taking Methotrexate as well as Arava, low dose prednisone and Remicade. I know it seems like a lot but apart from the occasional flare I have been doing fairly well. Except for the tiredness that never seems to go away, that's my biggest complain. Considering that I have gone thru 4 hip replacements plus other stuff I can't complain that I can still work albeit part-time and can still walk even if with a cane.

I have heard very good review from friends in Embrel. My rheumy also uses Humira quite often to good results from what I have heard.

Good luck, hope you find the right combo for you.

Imagine for a moment your arthritis completely vanishing right now.

If, in a moment, your pain and stiffness melted away. And your joints all of a sudden functioned like a well-oiled machine.

Like a magic wand was waived, you'd be able to jump up from your chair and run around the room like a kid.

And imagine that you'd never have to suffer as much as a pinch of arthritis stiffness or pain ever again.

I know this sounds impossible right now, but bear with me, because sometimes miracles happen.

It was a gift from a woman on the other side of the world. From the kindness of her heart, she took pity on my suffering and taught me how to completely reverse my arthritis.

Today, I want to do the same for you!

Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief. For cure you will have to follow acupuncture.

There is no medicine for RA, OA, H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for Ear Ache, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

    Acupuncture is the best treatment.

I treat RA with our SHREE SWASTHYAYOG THERAPY with 90% success, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.

The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, meat and soups, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

You can have osteoarthritis as well as rheumatoid- I have it that way, plus you can have fibromyalgia, or any other connective tissue disease that flares all at once. See a really GOOD rheumatologist!

yea sure it causes joint pain stiffness disconforts....and to mentions that drugs like methotrexate causes immunosupression so you are easily to get ill.

i would suggest visit the doctor and get some suggestions from them about the medications.
